It can't be denied, but there are a TON of islamic radicals, many prominent ones, who have attributed their exposure to the West as reaffirmation of their devotion to jihad.
This won't be solved simply by building schools. I do think you're on to part of it, but keep in mind that the "defend Islam for PC reasons" crowd plays up this angle to downplay the reality of "true believers."

The other countries in the ME aren't fans of ISIS. Let them deal with it. If ISIS didn't have our military equipment we left behind, they'd be a lot less of a threat.
They hate us over there because of our history over there IMO.

While I won't say you're wrong, if we could unwind and limit our involvement, would we still be the "far" enemy? I don't know.
Suffice to say, the idea we're a target because they simply hate our freedom is bullshite. We have meddled and made a mess in foreign relations, and I won't pretend some of the response isn't understandable.
If you're an Afghani youth who had nothing to do with foreign AQ fighters (you probably didn't have any understanding of it) at the time of 9/11, and then America rolls into your country and begins to remind you of your father's tales of the Soviets, you might join the Taliban too.
Now, on the opposite side, I'd argue Afghanistan has an obligation to not allow its territory to be used by terrorists, but again, that's kind of expecting a lot for tribesmen who don't even see themselves as Afghani.
