Modern day journalism is garbage, it's one of the more obvious examples of what grade inflation and declining academic rigor is producing.

I think the first part is correct but the second has more to do with dilution and time.
It isn't that J-schools aren't turning out competent reporters it is there are far too few of them compared to the number of "reporters" in the internet world. In the "old days" where the fastest print news was the newspaper cub reporters didn't write for the news section of the paper, much less the front page. They cut their teeth on human interest and the like. News section and especially above the fold articles were usually written by veterans and then carved up by at least one if not two editors, the kind of folks that know you evacuate buildings, not people (anyone get the reference?). This tended to result in at least a minimum quality use of the language.
Today with the 24/7 news cycle most reporters don't have an English degree much less a J-school degree. Most just want a job and can type, their work doesn't run through editors they just type and upload. The pressure for speed results in poor or no proofing.
You generally don't find this level of English in major print papers and certainly not papers of record. It is mainly a result of the huge number of jobs in the internet age without a corresponding increase in qualified journalism graduates.

You used to see, near courthouses and city halls, TV reporters accompanied by a professional camera man waiting to record a story.
Now it is a 22 year old kid with an iPhone and, sometimes, a tripod to put the phone on to self-record a piece.
