A U.S. Park Police officer accidentally shot himself Thursday while being attacked by a rabid raccoon in northwest D.C., police said. The officer was attacked in the 2500 block of Horse Stable Lane NW near St. John's College High School, in a more suburban area near Rock Creek Park. While trying to fend off the raccoon, he attempted to shoot the animal but accidentally shot himself in the foot. At some point, a second officer arrived and shot and killed the raccoon. "I heard what sounded like five shots, perhaps. I'm not sure," said Jim Hunt, who lives nearby. The officer was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Park Police said. No one else was hurt in the incident.

Gotta question the training some of these cops go through before they are handed a gun

Police are only trained to kill dogs.

A fricking rabid coon is not something I would want to mess with.

I have known plenty of park police. They're usually extremely green and most just use it as a foot in the door to the start of a federal career. Very very high turnover too. I would still say their training is in general much higher than most local/state PDs. .That being said, this is obviously an accident.
I did see an old retired overweight Leo once who didn't have a weapon on him. There was a rabid fox around causing serious issues. Dude gets in his truck and starts chasing the thing all over the ducking place to run it over lol.

I'll point out that a moving, crazy arse raccoon could be a tough shot even at close range.

Police are not trained to shoot small, rapidly moving animals. They're trained to shoot stationary targets. Made of paper.
