The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office is beginning to see a rise in catalytic converter and diesel particulate filter (DPF) thefts throughout the parish. The majority of the victims have reported seeing debris located under their vehicles (bolts, metal shavings, pieces of rust, etc.) This is the direct result of the pieces being cut off of their vehicles. On some newer model vehicles, it will not start, due to the vehicles computer sensing the missing components. Catalytic converters and the diesel particulate filters are also extremely expensive to replace for the victim. Full size pickup trucks (Ford F-150/250’s, Dodge Rams and Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierras) are easy targets for thieves, due to higher ground clearances allowing easy access. Residents are asked to park their vehicles in a well-lit secure location and to call 911 if they notice anything suspicious. Anyone with information about these crimes or believe they may be a victim, is asked to contact, Detective Nelson with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office by calling (985) 726-7856 or (985) 898-2338.

All will be sold on eBay or Craigslist.
Do not buy from these criminal supporting websites.

I've never heard of this. I wonder how much they get for them?

I'm pretty sure they remove the platinum and palladium and sell that.

Ironically, none of you understand how we're already being screwed by paying for cc's. It's the most useless, unnecessary part on vehicles if vehicles were made correctly. Doubt any of you understand a word of this though.

Amazon would welcome them with open arms. Bezos has allowed fake apparel to be sold on his site for years.

It’s not the converter itself it’s the metal inside that they want

You would think parking inside the office would have been a deterrent

The big truck was a Ford diesel and I believe they said it was around $3000 to replace

None of us? Wow. How do you manage to get through the day surrounded by people who know nothing at all about catalytic converters? Must be tough. But I'm happy for you that you have this infinitely small slice of knowledge known only to you to keep you warm at night.

On the DPF they cut them up and scrap some of the metal that's inside of them, I know when I did my DPF delete on my F250 I went and found someone who scrapped them on Facebook and got $300 for it. He told me he buys up a few, chops them all up, and gets like $450/each for whatever is inside they're looking for.

Removing it properly was a pain in the arse but I'd imagine a thief with a cordless sawzall can cut one out in just a couple quick minutes.

Honda Pilots are especially susceptible to this. Big cats, relatively easy to get under, etc.

Alloy wheels are another target. Muh Camrys, etc., come with big 18" wheels now, to give an illusion of quality. Seen more than one of these contraptions sitting wheel-free on cinder blocks.

Also an issue in Nola. Junkies sell them at the scrap yard for a few bucks.

I'd be pissed if I went outside in my driveway and my truck was missing parts. I hate a damn thief.

When I was younger, and drove an old beat up 89 2500, I cut my own cat out and replaced it with dual pipes all the way out. I just threw away the part though.

That's part of the problem. The scrap yards are just as guilty at that point. They should not be able to buy multiple of those from an individual. If it's not from a business that would have a valid reason to have them, then it should be not okay for them to buy. That would eliminate a lot of this problem.

Exactly.

The scrap yard here is basically like a druggie/junkie chop shop. 90% of the people there are selling shite they've pulled from abandoned houses, construction zones, etc.

They're definitely culpable in this. I know contractors that hire 24/7 security for new house construction because of this.
