Took Michelle Obama 8 years and kids would still rather sit inside and play Xbox. It took Pokemon GO a few hours to get kids to go outside and do shite

That's a damn shame. St Pete would be my favorite city in America if it weren't for the urban dwellers in South St Pete.
I was riding my bike on the libel las trail as it dipped into S. 4th or so and some 13-14 year old urban dwellers tried to close line me (presumably to rob me) and were yelling racial slurs at me. Needless to say I hauled ads out of there before it escalated and never went back. That's why we can't have nice things.

Folks this age remember Pokemon, it's something that connects.
The actual concept is basically a scavenger hunt; you go exploring stuff for fun. I do some photography as a hobby, and have seen groups post games like that:
you'd get a task like "take a picture of a bunch of triangles", and people would have things like the scaffolding on bridges, etc, that would meet the challenge. You'd usu see about 20 challenge tasks, and have to do it in a couple of hours; people were posting their photos on Flickr etc. Kind of fun little adventure, if you had nothing to do for the afternoon.
Pokemon game seems to take advantage of the concept, but we nix'd it due to a couple of reasons.
1) not in favor of being GPS tracked, on principle (and reports of people being lured into robberies or away from homes, to get robbed, make that argument stronger)
2) with the current social environment in/around BR, not a good idea to go aimlessly wandering.

There are still kids in their 20's-30's rocking Pokemon on the Gameboy.

My kids played Pokemon games since the 90s. I have never been interested in any Pokemon game. Until now. I really kind of want to try this one.

I just got an email at work warning that a piece of art in front of our building is a landmark or spawn spot in the game and to be aware of extra foot traffic going through the parking lot.

Subtle nudge for people with older smartphones to update.

You told your son, who is in his 20's, he can't play pokemon?

On the radio this morning a girl called in and said she was out at a bar and noticed 10-15 people huddled in a corner with their phones out. Sure enough they were trying to catch a Pokemon......in a bar. That's pretty pathetic.

fricking nerds.
At least this time the game is forcing them to get out into the world and move their pale, scrawny legs.

My son and I have been doing it. It is great because he never wanted to jog with me. It was easy to get his sister running, but he needed this to get him into it. Now I can exercise without hiring a babysitter or leaving him home alone.
It is still < Star Wars Card Trader by Topps though.

About a year ago I bought a couple of those disposable go-phones, when there was a good price deal. Simply speaking, they were nice electronics gifts.
You never had to activate the sim card account to use one for wi-fi, and there was a built-in GPS map program that didn't use cell data. It would work just fine in a car, just reading off the satellites, and didn't cost a penny for data.
Had a micro SD clot and you could fill it up with music, for cheap.
Had a completely functional web browser that worked on wi-fi, which seems present anywhere you sit in public (coffee house, McD's etc), to surf and read.
It was under $20, and like having a 32 gig ipod and dedicated map/GPS device.
If the game would work on that, it wouldn't be using data minutes. And best of all, if you never used it as a phone, it's just an anonymous device, so you would not be tracked as an idividual.

A lot of businesses are putting up signs warning Pokemon Go players that the characters at their location are for paying customers only. Apparently, lots of nerds are starting some shite.
I missed the Pokemon craze, which isn't to say I really "missed" it, but if they make a Mario Bros. Go or Zelda Go, I'm ALL in!

Applications are pretty endless.
They could incorporate tons of stuff into the technology.
Think about running down the street collecting gold coins as Mario

I'm a bit confused by how it works. Who decides where the characters are? If they are in private businesses, does the business have to okay it before the character is placed there?

Or think about the all coin collecting of a Sonic the Hedgehog version.....
