Do we have any stats after 2017?

Are the numbers being compared the exact same?
Yes

Do people report violent crime at the same rate as they did in the past?
I would imagine it's significantly higher

I could find some, but the general pattern is flattening around 2014 through the Covid era where there was a short-term spike until about 2023 and then crime has fallen like a rock nationally.
There are a few exceptions, but that's the general/national pattern.

Overall, violent crime is way down from its peak. The nation as a whole has never been safer. The problem is that law abiding civilized people have always been generally safe, and they are still safe today…but not as safe as they used to be.
It is the violent crime in public spaces (malls, churches, schools, parks, etc) that is relatively new and/or more brazen and dangerous, where the base criminality and disregard for human life that law abiding civilized people never see has made its way into “everyday” life. And it is the youthfulness of the offenders that is so shocking and worrisome

Property crime is pretty bad even in suburban areas. The average person in a big metro is more likely to run into stolen packages, car theft, broken car windows, etc. When your property is unsafe from theft you are losing a pretty important part of the social contract.

Well…property crime is not in decline as much as violent crime, and at least anecdotally property crime is not culturally specific. White trash is just as likely to steal as are black hoodrats. Moreso in fact because the population of white trash is significantly higher

Do you know the criteria for what constitutes a violent crime to be included in the numbers? Is it just a victim's report or is there further vetting required? What of the suggestions that certain major cities do not contribute their numbers to the database?

Retarded.
a. Those numbers weren't just left out. The feds used models
b. The jurisdictions all presented their data publicly

It's a bit of both and always has been. Murder is usually the standard for mass-level analysis b/c it's hard to finagle
