My Mom was in bed all weekend as she was in pain and the pain medicine made her sick. I was hoping we would have a nice weekend together, but couldn't spend much time as she was sleeping most of the weekend.

Weaver, cherish each and every moment you can with her, regardless of what you can or can not do. The iminent hardship on you and your family will not be easy and will be remembered the rest of your lives. I have been thru what you are going thru, it will be tough. Just being with your Mom when she opens her eyes or needs a hand to hold or handling her simple requests will mean more than you could ever imagine.

Be strong, be there and be as up-lifting as you can for her.

May God Almighty dispatch to your mom, and her loving family, angels of healing, strength, comfort, and hope as you face this difficult time together. May He keep you in His loving arms until such time that you will be able stand on your own once again.

Thanks again to all. I spoke to my Mom's boyfriend tonight and she is doing better. No more nausea, but she took too many meds, so she is a little loopy. I am going up to see her again on Thursday night, as someone will need to be with her during the day on Friday.

To all of you,

I have some sad news to report.

I spoke to my Mom's oncologyst today and he believes that the cancer is starting to win the battle. She has a tumor on her back, which he believes that removing it won't help her chances of beating the cancer. He also said the pain that she is having is also due to the cancer spreading. He said it is up to my Mom, but at this point she can't continue chemotherapy as her blood counts are not high enough. His suggestion was to get off of the chemotherapy and begin to consider Hospice care. This is the worst day of my life, having to admit to myself that my Mom isn't going to make it. I know we all die, but she is too young and wanted to do so many things. I don't know what to do.

I talked to my brother and he suggested that we let my Mom decide when she wants to tell us. When this first happened last year, my girlfriend suggested that she move in with us, so I hope that is what she wants to do. I will need to buy a bigger house, as the one I have just won't work, but I was in the process of doing this anyway, so I will just need to act fast.

I have also contacted my employer to see if I can take FMLA time or I will have to submit my resignation, as my importance now is to spend as much time with my Mom that I can while she is here. I guess in the back of my mind, I knew this was a possibility, but am just not prepared.

In closing, I want to thank all of you for your prayers and kind words. I refuse to quit praying. I will continue to do so and hope that at least the remaining time she has will be pain free and know that she will be with her family.

Thanks again,

Matt Plavidal

Matt, you sound like a wonderful son to your mom. You are doing everything that you possibly can, and much more than many people would. As a mom, I can tell you she's very proud to have you as her son. Don't forget to take care of yourself, too.

I'll still be thinking of you, your mom, and your family.

Weaver, I am sorry for your news. It is never easy to lose a loved one. My Dad passed away almost 5 years ago now. I still miss talking to him. One of my nephews was killed in a small plane crash the year before that. I can admit it here because none of my family reads this board, but he was my favorite. I can still hear his voice from our many telephone conversations.

Since you have asked for prayers and keep praying yourself, make sure that you keep the Faith that she is going to a much better place.

The Iona College motto is Certa Bonum Certamen, which is Latin for "Fight The Good Fight". It sounds as though both you and your Mom have done so.

It is in the Good Lord's hands. Stay strong for her and God Bless!

Weaver,

You can never be prepared for such news....it is all too common a story, as you can see from the other posts....just try to hang in there and continue to handle things just the way you have been...the most important thing now is that your mother be as comfortable as possible, even if it means she is not awake to talk with you...

try to hang out with your job, etc. and not make any life changing decisions for a week or two....at that point, you will know what to do...hang in there brother...

ETA: weaver, your employer probaly also offers some counseling for just this kind of thing...don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it...

I'm there man! She is in my prayers. Keep my wife in your prayers, too. She has just gone through a fight with cancer, too. She has been clean now for 3 months. Her check up was great.

Thanks to all of you for your thoughts and prayers. It has been the worst 5 days of my life. I lost my grandfather in 99, but he had parkinson's disease and had lived his life, although I was not ready to let him go. It is sad with my Mom, because my Dad left my Mom, I and my brother when I was barely 1 year old. We have always been close, more so that my grandmother or brother is with my Mom. I have been crying uncontrolably and pray when I can. I honestly just don't know what to do, other than to continue to pray and be there for my Mom, whether it is just sitting there and holding her hand or talking to her. It is a shame that people have to suffer, but I have to believe that she will be in a better place and I will miss her dearly. I don't know how I will make it thru this. I am thinking of starting a journal, as a way to express my feelings, whether good or bad. I am doing the best I can. I just have the feeling that I am all alone. I am not married, don't have any children. I have a brother and my grandmother and my Dad. My Mom always kept everything together, so I will need to be that person and just take care of my grandmother.

I can't say this enough, but please give your Mom a hug and just appreciate the time you have with her. I sometimes think perhaps I should have spent more time than I did with her. I have a new appreciation on life, although it is sad to think this is what it took to realize it. I will somehow need to get thru this.

Again, from the bottom of my heart, I thank all of you for everything.
