Little known fact:
Louisiana’s peak power demand occurs in the winter not the summer. Electric heaters combined with darkness coming earlier and right at 5 PM usually when people get home and turn on a ton of lights and, interestingly, the 5 o’clock news. You can see the spike that hits exact at that time.

We heard the same in Houston thinking that power would be out a few hours. My house had no power for over 30 hours with temps in the mid teens. Other areas have been without power for twice as long.

If that is true, then why is maintenance scheduled more in the winter, instead of the summer?
Not saying you are wrong, I'm just curious.

What happened in Texas was not a rolling blackout, at least, that's not where they ended up.
I think in Texas, yes, you have capacity / demand issues, but I also think there is a lot of line damage as well. I curious if it turns out the reason you had no power for 30 hours is because of line / facility damage.

This is the biggest lie I've ever seen.
They aren't using more power just cause its KINDA cold today. What a joke!

After finding out Enron and the State of California purposely conspired & enacted routine rolling blackouts for a massive money scam/skim, and not over a real energy shortage, my default now is to always assume that every scheduled rolling blackout is an outright lie.

Thanks for the education on it. I was actually wanting to understand. Again, I was curious how we are having spikes in say Baton Rouge when half the city was without power. It doesn’t make sense that you have neighborhoods without power and for them to have blackout due to usage. Even as I type this I know whole neighborhoods without power using no energy from Entergy.

Cleco was doing rolling blackouts yesterday too.

Yup, because Cleco is part of MISO as well

Neighborhoods, government buildings, schools, malls, stores, restaurants, LSU, etc etc etc...all CLOSED...
All not using power and power companies make you think they are overwhelmed?
Its fricking 37 degrees in BR and Lafayette..how could they possibly be out of power?

Because half their customers haven’t paid them in almost a year as it is... now everyone’s running this month’s bill up like a MFer and they won’t pay that bill either.

LSU still has lights on in every building and stadium. Research facilities have freezers that must be kept on.

You say that, but to be fair it’s entirely possible that Entergy IS having the problems. They are by far the largest power generation company in Louisiana.
lostinbr,
I believe you're on to something with this TD's name.

Electric companies to perform rolling blackouts due to surge. Government wants to go ALL electric for GO GREEN. This looks promising....
Posted on 2/18/21 at 4:12 am to tigerbacon
Apparently green energy only works in cold weather when the natural gas, coal, and nuclear energy grid has roiling blackouts to compensate for it.

I think renewables are mandated by 2050.

Funny how renewables take oil & gas...

While many businesses may be closed, you still have thousands and thousands of homes with people running their heaters hard. Similar to what happens during the summer. Everyone gets home at 5:30, kicks the AC on and turns on the stove to cook supper.
Also, there is not one power source solely for BR. As mentioned, power generation is shared across a large area by multiple providers. So while demand may be low in BR today, the rest of the region may be covered in ice and requiring a higher demand than the entire system can handle.
