Taking my wife and son up this summer. We'll be doing the tourist things mainly. Which neighborhood is best to stay in? Midtown? Cool places to eat, etc.
Also, if you know of any good, reasonably priced ($200-$250/night) let me know. Thankya.

Marriott.com, and you don't have to pay $250/night
I like to stay in Chelsea, the Upper East Side, and Flatiron District
If y'all have never been, hiit the basics-- Katz's Deli, Sardi's, Joe's Shanghai, Peter Luger, Bemelman's Bar, Cocktails at the St. Regis, Grimaldi's, McSorley's Old Ale House, Burp Castle, and have some street foods.
Take the wife to Bergdorf's

Last time my parents were there they stayed at The Standard and really liked it. I stayed at the waldorf over the summer and although very nice, it was definitely a tad overrated. Just check tripadvisor first. If you're going with family, might want to try something a little less pretentious. There's a lot to do around the financial district and if you get a chance try to see the new elevated park. They've converted an old raised train line into a park which is pretty cool.
Check out central park, guggenheim, the met, and I bet your son would really like the intrepid sea/air/space museum. As for food, if you want to check out cool hipster shite try Momofuku, they do really fancy ramen. It's hard to go wrong with food in NYC. Have a good time!

Try the Pegu Lounge down on Houston.
Super delicious and unique cocktails. Go there before dinner. Its a hole in the wall, but unforgettable, and you and your wife will have a special NYC memory that most people dont.

Family friends of my parents own La Mangeoire in Turtle Bay. Excellent French bistro.
NY Pizza Suprema right near Penn Station/MSG is very good pizza for a cheap price. I'm also a big fan of Neapolitan-style pizza and Motorino in Brooklyn hit the spot. Angelo's is brick-oven pizza near Central Park on W 57th and 6th. Very good as well.
McSorley's is a place you must go. It remains one of the oldest taverns in NYC and has had many famous patrons, including a couple Presidents. There are only two beers on tap: a light and dark. The sawdust on the floor is pretty cool. There's typically a line out the door before the bar opens. $5 for two beers, cash only.
Another very old bar is Pete's Tavern on Lexington and 18th. Relatively pricy, but very good food. Very interesting, rustic atmosphere.
Grab some food from a vendor around Bryant Park and eat in the park. Very popular destination for professionals and tourists alike to eat lunch.
Pretty damn tired, so this is all I have for now.
ETA: screw it, I'll just add more:
Places to check out:
Head to Comedy Cellar if you can. It's a very well-known establishment and known comedians are known to come in randomly and do sets.
The Spotted Pig in Greenwich Village has craft beers from all over the place.
Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden in Queens. Just an AWESOME outdoor beer garden.
Barcade in Brooklyn on Union Avenue is awesome. A lot of craft beer and all sorts of old school video games.
Momofuku Noodle Bar on First Avenue is amazing. It's a pretty small joint and the wait can be quite awhile during peak hours.
Gyu-Kaku is a really good Japanese BBQ place with multiple locations in Manhattan. Haven't been for a couple years, but they had a great happy hour deal with everything half off.
I've only done Crif Dogs once because it's so unhealthy, but it was the most incredible drunk food I've ever had. I've heard it's excellent whilst sober, too. It's in the East Village. There also happens to be a Speakeasy connected to the place. Never went in, but drinks are expensive.
Shake Shack is a pretty touristy place, and I don't have it much, but it's pretty damn good.
Katz's Deli on Houston and Ludlow is a pretty famous place with an incredible pastrami sandwich.

I always stay in Theatre District. Centrally located from a walking stand point. You will ride the subway to some things regardless of where you stay. Have fun.

You might want to check out jetsetter.com for hotel deals. You can usually grab a decent deal most of the time.

That would be Please Don't Tell. You have to enter through the phone booth. You can make a reservation if you have at least 5 (I think).

Most overrated tourist destination. It's hard to do anything "cheap"

I went last year to work the Super Bowl. The advice I got was... Visit Top of the Rock and not the Empire State Building, shorter lines. Take the Staten Island Ferry instead of the Statue of Liberty tour, much shorter with same views. The Natural History Museum and City Park to Times Square is a good day long plan (we did this). Reserve a spot for the 9/11 Memorial if you plan on going. I had a great time myself. Plan on the taking the Mrs back soon, preferably during the warmer months haha

+1
Stayed with my roommate in Brooklyn and went to the Crif Dogs by his place after a night in Williamsburg. Was rather awesome.
