They are likely trying to ensure they think everything through and take the precautions they can, not so concerned about you getting to see them crash before u return from lunch

should of kept going to london, would of burned the necessary fuel, and if he lands safely the passengers are not off schedule by too much

something about landing at nearest suitable airport in the FARs come to mind, as well as the pilots being fatigued after a pond crossing and then having to perform some of that pilot stuff?
