We don't know anything about the on board weather radar that they were using. The stock factory weather radar that these old jets have is only "OK" and in 2D and not nearly as good as the 3D systems that are newer.
If this jet had the original factory weather radar, that could be a factor.

Fair point.
This plane was at a minimum 19 years old (last production run of the Learjet 60 was 2007).
With that said, probably still good enough to maintain 20 nm separation I would think.

We also don’t know if the plane had an avionics upgrade at some point. I know that used to be common with older aircraft. If it had one than the planes radar wasn’t an issue.
I read today that the family was two hours late for departure. That leads to speculation that the crew was under pressure to make up time. Who the hell knows? Who’s to say the captain wasn’t trying to impress the young girl sitting next to him and made a rash decision? Way too many possibilities that we may never actually know.

How’s it stupid? You going to feel better flying with a woman or a man? You know the answer even if you won’t admit it. I sure as hell don’t want a woman at the controls of a plane where I’m a passenger.
