I heard icing too from a friend of the victim. No clue how he knows this outside of an airmet up for that area.

Small, private aircraft go down all the time.

There are more than 167,000 general aviation aircraft (non-airline) operating in the world, they fly more than 25 million hours a year. In 2019 there were 132 fatal crashes in the entire world, that would be what most people would define as not very often.

I had a flight plan filed to fly to Dallas yesterday. I looked at the weather and decided that the back edge of that system was too dangerous from an icing perspective. Cold temps and clouds and low ceiling remaining. That is exactly where this happened. Right at the point where temps at altitude were at or below freezing and still visible moisture in the air.

So sad all if these recent crashes have happened in poor weather and with full loads. I’m sure it is hard to say no to a full plane who have all made plans for the meetings or trips for which the flight was planned.

Still too early to determine cause of this crash, but if icing itself wasn’t the cause, it was certainly involved even if simply from the added concern regarding it adding to the stress on the pilot.

I know these were fast moving storms but do you think it would be possible to create temporary weather exclusion zones for GA aircraft when conditions like this are present?

The one of them I knew was a great guy, and he is leaving behind a nice young family. Tragic and sad. My thoughts are with his family and the family of the others that were killed.

Some GA planes are approved for FIKI - flight into known icing.

They will have some type of deicing equipment, either inflatable leading edges that break the ice off, or a weeping wing that puts out a deicing fluid...heated props. I'm sure there are others. Cessna 182s don't have any of that.

You couldn't just make it illegal for GA aircraft to operate there since some are perfectly safe there. The flight that happened here was certainly outside of the rules. Icing conditions existed, there was an airmet showing that, and there were at least three pilot reports of icing in the immediate area where pilots had reported picking up ice at 3K, 3.8K and at 5K. All the signs and warnings were there that it would be a problem. History has shown that the more people you have to say "no" to, the harder it is to make the decision to ground the plane.

I always try to have an out and make a decision in plenty of time to exercise that out.
