I know people who dispose of any Rottweiler's or pit bull's that stray onto their property. I'm all for it.

Was the pitbull euthanized? Article didn't say - just that the owner was issued a citation.

A review of 82 dog bite cases at a level 1 trauma center where the breed of dog was identified concludes that attacks by pit bulls are associated with higher morbidity rates, higher hospital charges, and a higher risk of death than are attacks by other breeds of dogs. Bini, John K. MD; Cohn, Stephen M. MD; Acosta, Shirley M. RN, BSN; McFarland, Marilyn J. RN, MS; Muir, Mark T. MD; Michalek, Joel E. PhD; for the TRISAT Clinical Trials Group, Mortality, Mauling, and Maiming by Vicious Dogs, Annals of Surgery (April 2011, Vol. 253, Issue 4, pp. 791–797).
Merritt Clifton, editor of Animal People, has conducted an unusually detailed study of dog bites from 1982 to the present. (Clifton, Dog attack deaths and maimings, U.S. & Canada, September 1982 to November 13, 2006; click here to read it.)
The Clifton study show the number of serious canine-inflicted injuries by breed. The author's observations about the breeds and generally how to deal with the dangerous dog problem are enlightening. According to the Clifton study, pit bulls, Rottweilers, Presa Canarios and their mixes are responsible for 74% of attacks that were included in the study, 68% of the attacks upon children, 82% of the attacks upon adults, 65% of the deaths, and 68% of the maimings.
In more than two-thirds of the cases included in the study, the life-threatening or fatal attack was apparently the first known dangerous behavior by the animal in question. Clifton states: If almost any other dog has a bad moment, someone may get bitten, but will not be maimed for life or killed, and the actuarial risk is accordingly reasonable. If a pit bull terrier or a Rottweiler has a bad moment, often someone is maimed or killed--and that has now created off-the-chart actuarial risk, for which the dogs as well as their victims are paying the price.

200 lb Great Dane, stepped in with authority and neutralized the situation. The pit didn’t want any.

quote:Yep I have to agree, and if it was off leash then the owner needs to be charged with dog at large and animal cruelty. This happens all too often and the pits owners never are able to control them. Fact is you have a small dog and child keep it the frick away from a pit bull.
More proof that pit bulls are a dangerous breed that should be not be out in public. They’re responsible for mauling small pets and children to death way too often.

It was likely the beagle's fault. Pit bulls usually wouldn't hurt a fly. I am sure if you ask this pit bull's owner, it was the sweetest dog ever.

I carry a gun for a couple reasons. Biting arse dogs are one.

I’ve never met or seen a pit bull owner that wasn’t poor and/or trashy. You don’t see too many middle-upper class individuals walking their pit bulls. Usually have to have a tattoo as well. What’s the appeal?
We actually have one in our neighborhood. The young lady weighs about 90#s and the pit bull about 45#s. If that dog went off, there is no way she could handle it. She and her SO seem like nice people but I fear this story may not have a good ending.

I can relate. My dad has a half blue heeler, half beagle, but she acts mostly like a beagle. She doesn't realize she is smaller than other dogs because she will take on anybody. Not a fan of people outside our family and likewise it is best that we don't take her anywhere in public.

I think we all understand not all pits are killers. But the fact remains that they are a violent breed.
True,
However, if you know that 1 out of 1000 Popsicles are laced with death poison...... how many are you willing to eat?
Not all pit bulls will kill or maim humans.... BUT ALL of them might.
Find me one, just one instance of the death animals owner not stating "They had never done this before, this is the first time......" "They were such a good dog"....before they weren't.....

Nine times out of ten the owners of pit bulls all have the same qualities,
- high school education or less
- confrontational attitude issues
- false sense of entitlement
- ignorant to facts (hence the made up "it's always the owner, not the breed" excuse)

we "retired" her from public appearance when she was 10 or so, she passed away at 16, 5 years ago.
Our friends had a blue healer that attacked their kid. The kid instigated it, but you can still see the scars on the kids face 6 years later. They put that dog down.

Wonder what would happen if they put a human baby next to them.

Jumped on the dog. The kid was little and didn't know better but still he shouldnt have jumped on it.
They had one dog that you could do that to, and then they had this one.
Its really the parents fault. The dog had attacked multiple other animals and bit a few people.

I wonder if the US has ever purposely driven an animal species to extinction for being a public nuisance.
