I’m surprised the Marines/Navy didn’t go after him for flying single pilot. In my time in a CH46 squadron, we never flew without two pilots. Even in a hover for maintenance, two were required when the wheels left the ground.
I’m thinking the Army was the same way with their Chinooks.

just speculation but I’m thinking it being Vietnam era a lot more John Wayne stuff was tolerated, with the old “what are they going to do, send me to Vietnam?” mindset
