Jxn MS 1979

Any old Jackholes remember these places?

Note the word "discotheque". I would have thought it had gone out of usage long before '79.

Benny Lynch, 1937 undisputed flyweight world champion from Scotland. He later devolved into a horrible drunk who lost his boxing license for being drunk in the ring. He also hit a baby carriage with a baby in it while driving drunk, beat his wife and her 11 year old sister, allegedly tried to gas his infant son with the stove, and assaulted two little girls (7 and 10) in a theater after his career ended.

He dies at 33 from malnutrition and tuberculosis.

On the photo of the 'silent' era Our Gang, the fat kid in front is not Chubby Chaney, but Joe Cobb, who was in most of the silent films, and preceded Chubby. Cobb also far outlived Chubby.

Freckled-face guy next to him is Harry Spear, and I think the blonde girl between Farina and Mary Ann is Jean Darling, who also had a long life. All in all, this line-up of Our Gang, with Mary Ann and Wheezer included, is from quite late in the silent run, from probably around 1928-29, right before the talkies started. Two of the key early kids, Mickey Daniels and Mary Kornman, had apparently already departed.

The Butcher Shop on Lakeland Drive was the bomb. They had a great breakfast and lunch. Then sold meat and pre-made food items to pick up on your way home from work.

I have no idea why there isn't a comparable meat market and gourmet food store in both Rankin and Madison counties. I know MSAs that have 20% the population of the Jackson area that have very successful comparable businesses.

Kurt Vonnegut was being held as a POW there and experienced the bombing. He later wrote a novel about it, Slaughterhouse-Five.
