Sisters Margot and Anne Frank enjoy a summer day at the beach in this undated photo taken sometime prior to the outbreak of World War II in the Netherlands. Both sisters would die at Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in early-1945.

Scuttlebutt was the mascot of a U.S. Navy minesweeper ship somewhere near San Diego, July 3, 1943.
The ID card says, “United States Navy Mascot / “Scuttlebut”, Hair - Black-White / Eyes - Brown / Born - 3-6-43 / 207-20-12 Jr. / “Trudie””

Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany and King George V, 1913
Note the Kaiser is wearing a British Field Marshal uniform while King George V wears the uniform of a German Field Marshal. Both monarchs, who were first cousins, held honorary ranks in one another’s military.

This Great Depression era picture was taken in 1938 by FSA photographer Russell Lee. This is a picture of a mother washing the feet of her children. The family worked as share croppers, and even the children helped work the fields.
