He did kill it with his bare hands. I think if I recall correctly he kneed it int he ribs multiple times and/or choked it.

For those that may not know, while it has Russian markings the plane is actually a P-39 Aircobra that the US sold/gave to Russia during WW2 under the Lend/Lease Program to help fight the Germans.
US pilots were not crazy for it but the Russians loved it as it was pretty much better than anything they could field in the air at the early part of the war.
