Photos of my Meteorite - It hit a building in Jackson, MS 8/29/1959
I have always enjoyed reading the posts related to Astronomy here, even though I seldom post anything in them. As I thought about that last night when reading the Asteroid post, I wondered if anyone would like to see the photos of my Meteoroid and how I got it.

On August 29, 1959 at around 9:00 (A Saturday night) a Meteorite hit the west side of the Medical Arts building on State Street in Jackson, MS. The Medical Arts building is a 6 story Doctor's office building, directly south of Baptist Hospital - owned by Baptist Hospital. It hit on the right lower edge of a 3 inch thick Red Granite facing stonework on the ground floor back side of the building - Offices of Abar Pharmacy Distributors. It took out a 2X3 inch corner edge of the stone, went through a plate glass window, impacted the floor, shattered and imbedded in the wall of the office.

My father was over Maintenance for Baptist back then (He is dead now) and when the alarm system in Abar's wnet off, he was summoned to allow the JPD entrance to the offices. The removed the pieces of the meteorite from the wall and took another piece about the same size as this one and chips. I have no idea what happened to those parts. My Father got this one and We have had it for years. It now lives in an old aluminum screw top 35 mm film can in my chest of drawers.

At some point in 1959, a professor at Millsaps college borrowed it and determined it was nickel Iron. It weighs 1.25 ounces and is heavy for it's size of approximately 3/4 inches. As you can see from the photos, it is pretty much cubical, with a pronounced melted edge. It is magnetic.

When the Professor borrowed it, my dad had a horrible time getting it back. I have never had anyone look at it who didn't want to keep it. In the world of meteorites, it is not all that valuable. There are many much larger and many examples out there, but it was my dad's and now is mine. It is NFS.

Some of the photos are good, and some, not so clear. A couple have a scale shown to indicate the size of the piece.

Thanks for looking. And please keep on posting Science stuff - MD

That’s very cool OP. Are you positive that’s a meteorite though? I just wonder about the flat surface, straight lines, cubical shape.

You’re should make a real Bowie knife with it, just like Jim Bowie did before he killed everyone on the Sandbar in Vidalia.

ETA: That’s very cool.

Nice story.
I’d love to have it myself. A lot of imagination as to where it came from

Can I have it?

I give you 2/3 of a super ball (a lawn mower hit it), most of a set of jacks and a torn Archie Manning card.

6 Largest Meteorites on Earth

Can you imagine either seeing/finding one of these monsters. Not only would you be unbelievably rich but damn that would be exciting.
