A Mongolian woman sentenced to die by starvation reaches out from the porthole of a crate in which she is imprisoned, c. July 1913. This photo was taken in July 1913 by French photographer Albert Kahn. Albert Kahn was a millionaire banker who pioneered color photography using the process invented by the Lumière brothers. During his trip through exotic countries, Albert Kahn visited Mongolia where he took this picture of a woman who was condemned to slow and painful starvation by being deposited in a remote desert inside a wooden crate that was to become her tomb. Initially the bowls on the ground had water in it, though was not intentionally refilled, and the person inside was allowed to beg for food which often just prolonged their suffering as they generally didn’t get enough food for the passersby. The photographer had to leave her in the box because it would be against a prime directive of anthropologists to intervene in another cultures law and order system.
Found this photo in a National Geographic magazine Vol. 41 Number 5 dated May 1922 on Google Books. Actually, I believe it's issues 1-6 from Vol. 41 but I haven't gone through the entire volume. I'll provide the link to the book:

Been listening to Dan Carlin's Hardcore History lately and I have a new love for WWI stuff.
I am about 65 minutes into part II. Very interesting. The French were so stubborn in how they approached WWI, its kind of mind blowing.
Its wild just how different WWI was compared to literally every other war in the history of the world before it. Carlin puts into perspective nicely.

February, 1946 - The dismembered arms of 6 year old Suzanne Degnan are discovered in the catch basin of an alley after being kidnapped from her home 2 blocks away. Her severed head and other body parts were found in several sewers throughout her North Side Chicago neighborhood.
July 24th, 1915 - Unidentified victims of the SS Eastland disaster kept at the 2nd Regiment Armory. The ship capsized in the Chicago River where 844 people drowned. A young George Halas was listed among the dead or missing, but he overslept and never made it onboard. This site would later become Harpo Studios.

The amount of lives lost and only in the first month of the war... Its just impossible to understand.

I've read that Adolf Hitler hated this photograph and did not allow it to be published. I wonder why?

2. What if Truman had agreed to Churchill's plan to rearm 100k German POWs and immediately go to war with Russia?
I've never heard of this and I'm pretty knowledgeable about WWII.
