Well, that explains a lot.
I live almost certainly within an hour east of you and have been here almost 32 years. Our standard of living is great; sure, we don't have the room to spread out that's available in the U.S., but Germany is pretty densely populated and real estate is ridiculously expensive. Foodwise, it's what you make of it. I make boudin, cook gumbo, smoke pulled pork, etc., and there are plenty of different cuisines to choose from (it's not always Knödel and Schweinebraten).
I can't comment on your health care, but ours is outstanding. I've had some health issues over the years and never had to wait long for treatment. Maybe I'm just lucky to live in Bayern, the jewel of Germany.
Would love to get together and watch some SEC baseball, if that's your thing, or just grill some steaks. It's boring watching my Razorbacks alone - still haven't converted many Germans, though a couple of friends keep me company, even if they don't understand the rules.

I currently live in Germany had to move here for family reasons. I can tell you that people who moved to another country with no connection to it probably had a much different idea of how life was going to be living in another country and when it doesn't live up to that expectation than they are disappointed and go home. Where I live there are great things that I like about Germany and other things not so much. You obviously need to learn to language or at least enough to get by. Taxes can be a pain in the arse if you make money there. Also there are certain things that are myths which you find out for yourself. I cringe when I hear Germany/Countries in Europe have such a great healthcare system. Definitely not the case. I think people who move to another country on a whim with no connection just find out that they I am not on vacation and I actually have to live here and that is when reality sets in.

The rest of the world sucks balls compared to the US. It’s really that simple.

Your experience is definitely different from mine and we live in Bavaria as well. My wife and I also have private insurance. For anything regular it is adequate ,but for having to see a specialist we have not had the best doctors.

I moved overseas for work then my employer relocated me to the corporate in Houston.

A buddy of mine living in Switzerland renounced US citizenship. Said it was because of double taxation.

That's why I do my best not to generalize. Maybe I just got lucky regarding location, but I haven't had any reason to complain since I arrived. Hope you're liking Bavaria. Do you plan to stay? I'll be here until the bitter end, as I've been in the system so long. We travel a lot, though, so after retirement I'll be going for extended stays in the U.S. and Asia.

Been reading up on this. People who move to SE asia. Mainly, it cost more than expected. This is usually people who didnt save or cant really succeed in corporate America. They move over and teach English to get a Visa. Eventually they fall back into the same issues they had here.
You just absolutely pinpointed two friends of mine but they still live in Spain but same life trajectory basically

A lot of American ex-pats in Europe are doing that. The American gov't creates a lot of red tape for people living here.

Jealous. Wish I had the balls to do that. When you move back and forth I imagine you basically just sell all your belongings and get on a plane?

Deltaland clearly hasn't travelled much. America is filled with shitholes that are way worse than European shitholes.

Currently living in the UK, doing a masters and will probably end up moving back to the US, only because the US just has way more job opportunities specifically in my field and it is really tough to get sponsored for a work visa in the UK. The UK (despite the very uncertain future) is really a decent place to live. Traditional British food kind of sucks, but there are so many other good other styles of food like Indian and Italian that it makes up for it. The biggest things I miss about home are primetime sporting events happening at like 2 AM here, expensive liquor in bars (beer is somewhat reasonable and really good here though), and obviously family and friends.
I feel really safe here, I have walked back to my house from pubs/clubs at 2 or 3 in the morning from the city centre and never felt unsafe, I mean murders in the UK make national news which is funny coming from America. Can't really comment on the NHS (healthcare) because I haven't used it yet. British people love the NHS, but the biggest complaint I hear is if you need prescriptions for special medication for things like ADHD, etc. it can be a pain to get. There is also private options too so it's not like anyone is forced to use the NHS if they don't want to.
I personally don't feel bored here, unless you live in a small town or village I'm not really sure how you would get bored in Europe. People in the northern part of the UK are so friendly and it is so easy to make friends/acquaintances here. I also enjoy not having to drive places and just being able to walk to whatever I need in 15 min or less. It is also amazing to get insanely cheap flights to Europe for like $40 roundtrip.

I have espn college pass for all things college. Not much of a pro sports fan, but there are, shall we say "other ways" to watch stuff live. But there's always the time difference...
Posted on 2/8/20 at 11:55 am to razor55red
Yeah they have Sky and BT Sport which have a deal to carry college spots here. But as a broke university student I use the "other ways" to watch everything so if I'm not up for it I miss it. It is really only an issue with NBA and LSU football because they just play games late.
