This tea isn’t warm, these people do it no matter the drink. The tea thing is throwing you off, here I’ll use another example with less complexities. Dr Pepper. I’d like a Dr Pepper with extra ice, and when they need a refill they shake their glasses at the server and say "excuse me can I get another. Oh and be sure extra ice".

My MIL is exactly like the OP describes. And if there is more ice in my glass than hers, she will comment!

Damn it’s almost like there’s a relationship between mass, specific heat, and the rate of change in temperature of the beverage you’re trying to chill. Maybe these customers would rather have a cold beverage that is slightly diluted as opposed to a warmer beverage.

Hint, by and large your glass gets filled to the top with ice then the drink poured over it. There’s no room to cram any more of that ice down into there.

The liquid will necessarily fill any vacant spaces in the vessel. More surface area of ice in the glass leads to more or less heat transfer?

I suppose it will cool it down slightly faster, but that ice also causes your glass to go empty much faster but you can only get two damned sips in before it’s empty. What’s completely not embarrassing and something that normal adults definitely do is slurp really load to get the servers attention, Shake your glass, maybe get up and go find the server, and do whatever you can to get their attention to give you your next refil of your two sip drink with extra ice,

You’ve never had a shitty server put a few ice cubes in the cup?

Also, why the frick am I tipping again if I’m not allowed to ask her to bring a new drink with fresh ice?

I’m a tea drinker, tea melts the ice, lukewarm tea is not good, thus more ice

Yep, most times they refill with warm tea as well. Thus the need for extra ice at the get go.

Dr Pepper.

Even with pre chilled fountain drinks they are still at about 40 degrees. More ice means more surface area and thus a quicker drop to ~32 degrees. This is even more noticeable/important when you are getting room temp (or sometimes warmer) tea poured in the glass.

Sure it is more work for the server and sure you have less drink in your glass but 'Mericans love ice-cold beverages. Move to Europe or pretty much anywhere else in the world and people asking for more ice will be few and far between but I bet you will be. At least you will get good beer served at a proper temperature.

If a drink is supposed to be cold I want it ice cold. I always ask my server for a lot of ice.

I’ve never been a server but I suspect they prepare iced drinks with a little ice and a lot of liquid in order to cut down on the number of refill trips they have to make.

extra ice

Do you mean a side of extra ice? If so, that is a pain.

However, the correct amount of ice (for me) is if the ice is crowning over the brim of the glass. I like to continually pour fresh drink over that beautiful freezing dome. And then at the end, I like to eat the ice.

Any self-respecting people from South Louisiana like the same thing.

The type of ice matters too.
