If you are a resident of a state, you have to pay taxes to that state. It’s cut and dry.
A current license is proof of residency.
A current license is proof of residency.

Moron. You’ll be taxed dependent on the address that you put on you w4, via your job. That’s it. DMV has no bearing on your income taxes. This may be the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen one argue over on this site.
Just stop, man. Your 100% wrong and you’re making yourself look like an idiot.

Looks like you hold dual residency and you’re just not claiming one, fraudster.

If you are a resident of a state
Where you performed the work and where you are domiciled is what matters.

I didn't hold official residence. You think your ID is official?

My pay stubs had my Texas address. That's more official than an ID. My utilities were for my Texas address. Those are more official than an ID.

I've had an Alabama ID for my whole life, including the past 8 I've been working and paying taxes in Louisiana.
Yup. Girlfriend has lived in Chicago for 4 years and still has her California ID, and she is most definitely paying Illinois state taxes. Not California.

I did it, works just fine. You just better be able to prove residency if they come ask, which the broke dick state of La can't really afford to do. I even moved back to La for a couple years and payed again, then moved away permanently. ID doesn't mean shite.

We can agree on that philosophically, but if you have a relationship with the address on your Louisiana ID, theyre going to say you are a resident whether you like it or not. That's a fact, no matter how much you don't like it.

Many of you are conflating didn't get caught with wasn't against the rules. They aren't the same thing.

Sure is a lot of posting from someone who doesn't care.

Second, if they do notice and act like they care, there are plenty of pretty simple ways to show domicile without a state ID

Incorrect.
I thought you were a CPA?

Probably, but if they do and you are in a no income tax state like Texas, you're going to be hammered with a tax bill.
Its likely a non-issue because you are being taxed in the other state.

But if you have a Louisiana state ID and a relationship with that address they are going to say you are still a resident of LA and not abandoned that domecile.

There was a thread on the money board a while ago where some people said this happened to them in this scenario. Not sure if something you do can flag it or if it’s just a case of getting extremely unlucky.

I know of more than a handful of idiots that moved to Texas from Louisiana that still, some after several years, still have a Louisiana ID, and are paying Louisiana income tax.
Giving away 5% of your money for God knows what reason. Makes zero sense.
That was one of the first things I changed, well before I even got my TX Drivers License. I quietly informed my work of my change of address. Payroll or HR didn't even question it. I'd prefer to never give Louisiana another red cent of my taxes. I try to get gas in Texas when I drive home so I don't even have to pay gas taxes to Louisiana. Just seems like money better spent in Texas.

In Louisiana, specifically you are credited for tax paid to other states. Since Texas is a no income tax state, if you are determined to be a Louisiana resident all of your income will be subject to Louisiana income tax. I believe off of the top of my head, it's schedule G, that will reconcile taxes paid to other states to your Louisiana liability.
