A hellofalot of people don't want to hear about the low mortality rate or realism. They are on an orgy of fear and don't want to lose that high. Someone was freaking out about how awful our recovery rate was in the US. Said you're more likely to die than recover. Do they have no idea it takes like 2-3 weeks to recover? So if we just started testing 2 weeks ago... how many recoveries should we have?

Even worse is going to be when the numbers double/triple just due to tests coming online. I do wish we had the ability for everyone to get tested because then we'd know the actual truth of what this is. Not some fake math page showing how exponential multiplying works. But real life numbers. Just the fact that a majority of the tests taken earlier came back negative shows me hope.

The cdc and private industry really fricked this up. If we had plenty of tests, the panic would
Be greatly reduced.

The entire idea that many people are asymptomatic but yet we only test those showing strong symptoms, is laughable.

Isn’t this just a math problem (a self fulfilling one)? If you test more people — particularly those with no or borderline symptoms — the denominator increases vs. positive tests. So the “curve flattens” but does that real prove anything?

If right now you only test Lambeth House, the numbers are higher, but if you throw in a couple of building of college kids in Burbank, you’ll feel much better about the numbers.

I’m betting that there are well over 1 million people infected with the Chinese flu (I the US) and just don’t know it. Proof will be in the pudding… Mortality rate. It’s been hovering around 1.5% over the last couple of days but that’s somewhat irrelevant as testing has just really started. If the final numbers land at .5% or lower this is going to prove to be just a big nothing burger. Not discounting those that died but simply stating this is no different then the flu or any other virus that has hit this country. Certainly not worth crashing the economy and shutting everyone’s life down to a screeching halt.

I love people who mix numbers with feelings. Who just vomit out what they like think using numbers to put a patina of legitimacy without even seeing if it fits together.

If 1 million were infected right now, it would mean it has a mortality/attack rate 10x LESS than flu. Which is patently rejected by all of the data.

If you want to assume 0.5% CFR, which is on the extreme low end of possible ranges but still plausible, you are looking at around 50-60k infected right now across the entire US.

The hundreds of people in line that have very few symptoms. Lots of allergies this time of year. Doctor on the news saying, now people clogging up hospitals that have no business being there.

How do you know that? It took damn act of Congress and a bunch of called in favors to get tested here in South Alabama with doctors notes and multiple doctors and surgeons demanding that people be tested.

Most of these tent locations require you to get doctors referral or call and prequalify, which includes exposure, symptoms etc to get tested.

Then doesn’t it take like 5 days to get the results? You’re probably at the hospital at that point anyway, what’s the point of getting tested.

ETA: they sure had the results of the Utah jazz pretty quickly.

The idea is to Identify areas where the disease is spreading rapidly and take the proper precautions and measures to contain the pandemic. However, it may already be too late for that if the disease was in fact already here and spreading in late December early January.
