re: People Begging For Flood Money on GoFundMe?

There are plenty of retired middle class folks who live on fixed incomes that have been flooded. Should they have had insurance, yes. But that doesn't mean people don't need help. I would rather give my money to friends, family, and co workers than some bullshite charity.

Dual income families that are drowning in debt (no pun intended) need to live in their means. Meaning, if you buy a $500k house in the GD swamp, you add that flood insurance policy. This may mean the Misses may have to settle with laminate countertops instead of quartzite.

Typical American mentality. Spend every dime I have on luxuries like half million dollar homes, but then when hard times hit expect someone else to bail me out. Anyone living in a mansion should never encounter a scenario where they need to be asking for money on gofundme.

I think most could afford the 200-500k houses.
its buying new cars, trucks, and boats every 3 years.

Beware of scam artists. They will be out there in many different areas/forms plying their trade.

I had a ford edge a few weeks ago as a rental. That vehicle right there is one fine driving machine, a lot better than the SO's Q5. I'm considering getting one when I'm in the market for a new car agian.

One of the reasons I started one(although I would imagine there are several legit charities that are helping people in LA....so not all are "bullshite"). Had friends here asking if I had made one yet for them. I don't know about other people, but I can say for myself that it's not like I'm expecting it to get some crazy amount of donations. Whatever it does get will only help in combination with whatever they get in FEMA money and then whatever my brother and I need to do to help them for the rest. My parents and sibling's combined annual income (this includes social security checks) is less than what a people would consider low income for one person.

There is a difference between someone doing it for themselves and someone else doing it for them.
With that said, my opinion is based on the fact I have never been in that situation so my opinion is based off of ignorance.

Nah I get what you are saying.
I've been guilty of being very judgemental on here and in IRL in general.
But lately I've basically been slapped in the face and put in a position where I cannot really judge anyone right now for anything. I'm just in "help my family out however I can mode".

I don't think I have ever seen a gofundme on Facebook. I must be doing something right.

People that have been paying into the system... but aren't "eligible" to get anything back out.
Just like DSNAP... if you are already receiving SNAP benefits well then you already qualify. If you haven't been mooching off the taxpayers then you'll need to register and see if you can qualify.

I started a sarcastic thread on here about why would anyone have insurance these days with gofundme. Foresight.

Your house burns down by accident or your relative gets cancer. These are about the only type of gofundme's I can understand. I still don't agree with them but I get it. But when 40,000 people lose their homes at the same exact time and everyone is literally in the same situation, the gofundme is just pathetic. What makes the recipient one gofundme more important than the thousands of others who also for whatever reason also have a gofundme? How do you pick and choose which one to donate to? And what about those who were too prideful to start one?
Really want to help? Roll up your sleeves and physically go help people. Start tearing down the inside of water soaked walls. Bring families food and water. Buy as many cleaning supplies and mops and trash bags as possible and deliver them to anyone and everyone instead of giving $50 a piece to the 4 different gofundme's of a friend of a friend on facebook and feeling great about yourself. There is currently a gofundme in Lafayette with $34k. It's absurd

Have you considered that some of the people donating money might be from another state and can't come here to actually help work?

Do they by chance peddle "medicinal" oils as well?
