Congress sets time-limited appropriations> DoD distributes that money> internal incentives push units to spend what they were given before the clock runs out.
So the funds are use it or lose it, but not spending does not reduce next year's funding. Is that correct?

An $1800 office chair isn't actually that nice. It's nice, but they make much more expensive and nicer ones.
I just hope the $1800 office chair wasn't the kind you can get at Walmart for $150. That would be typical government MO.
Also, y'all have to realize that the director of the department doesn't sign off on every single purchase order made by the department. There are millions a year.
There's a systemic problem and it doesn't rest at Pete's feet, nor Trump's.
Why is it so hard to change?
Because when Elon suggested cutting proven waste fraud and abuse, to the tune of a drop in the bucket of the budget, the commies started burning Teslas in the streets.

$2 million worth of Alaskan King Crabs is criminal. 15.1 million on ribeye steak is criminal. Seriously frick them. These people are entitled fricks. They work for the people... But then... it is "the people".. Can't expect the general public to do anything smart.
Yeah frick those selfish pricks risking life and limb to protect everyone
We could be spending this on funding illegals and all their scams right?
The same bitches in here crying were more than likely quiet as a church mouse pissin on cotton for the billions upon billions sent out across the world for some of the dumbest shite imaginable
They are only upset because they were told to be
FFS....
If we are going to send our young men and women out in harms way then they should at the very least do so with a belly full of the meals of their choice
God Bless Em!

the Pentagon tries to spend as much of its congressionally allocated budget as possible at the end of every fiscal year because of federal “use-it-or-lose-it” rules. If the department ends the year with leftover funds, it risks having its budget reduced the following year.
Not defending it, but this happens in every government department and private business that has use it or loose it budget policies.

The law just says the money expires if it isn’t obligated in the time window. There isn’t a rule that says “your budget gets cut next year.”
What happens instead is when Congress is building the next year’s budget, they'll look at prior spending rates. If a unit or program consistently leaves money unspent, it’s pretty common to conclude it was overfunded.
The pressure to spend isn’t really in the law itself. It’s that unused funds can become evidence you didn’t need that level of funding in the first place.

Was it millions of dollars in crab legs and steak?

Not just federal. Same thing with State, Parish, and City budgets as well. January is usually a really good month for me.

Oh ok, so we should not worry about entitlement abuse bc the pentagon also wastes money. That makes sense to a liberal I guess

Are you slow? Departments have budgets and in order to be able to get the same budget as the previous year they have to spend all of their money by the end of the year so they had to waste millions of dollars so they could get the same budget that will include money that next year they will have to spend on whatever so their budget doesn't get cut.
They have to waste money to get money they can waste. They couldn't find something else that could be of use to buy? You seriously think $2M on king crabs and $15M on ribeyes is okay? Utility workers risk their life getting power for people when it goes out during the storm you think Entergy is buying them crab legs and steaks?

Thanks. I was just puzzled why use or lose made January a 'good month' for that poster.

I doubt it, but if that is the case, I have no issues with that. Feed them well, they deserve it.

this concept is so infuriating, and i watch it happen year after year.
As is the increasing of the budget by 10% instead of 20% and calling it a “spending cut”. Governmental and budgetary accounting is BS and needs to be revamped to mirror the private industry, to the extent it’s possible.

They may not be buying crab legs and steak but rest assured they are finding something to spend the money on before the end of the fiscal year.
And yes its pretty common for plants to buy "luxury" food for plant baws especially when they are working during the holidays.

Here's the problem with the article it doesn't really dig into the details of where the crab, steaks, etc actually went. When they say the pentagon spent . . . does that mean it was blown in a massive tax payer mardi gras style food orgy at the pentagon or was this spent across all of our military installations across the world?
Were these purchased in Sep to serve in mess halls across the world for the 1.3MM active duty Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines? Many of which probably weren't able to spend Thanksgiving with their families.
Were they purchased to serve in the O Club or on base restaurants and then sold to the patrons at those restaurants?
This reads as gotcha journalism picking and choosing line items from a budget report to create shock and anger!
If it truly is wasteful spending then hang them from the yardarm!

quote:I agree to a point. But the Hegseth fluffers are trying to frame this as outrage over soldiers getting surf and turf, but that’s not really the issue. No one is upset about troops eating well.

The question is why something as basic as feeding the troops would show up during the September “use it or lose it” spending rush that every vet recognizes. If the story is true, that’s something that should already be covered in the normal operating budget.
Did they really push routine food costs down the road and hope there’d be leftover money at the end of the fiscal year? Because if that’s what happened, that’s just sloppy budgeting.
Either way it undercuts the whole “we’re cutting wasteful spending” message. If you’re serious about fiscal discipline, basic operating expenses shouldn’t suddenly appear in the year-end spending scramble.

The best coke, sprite and fanta is bottled out of Saudi Arabia and came in those mini cans.
Those mini can kicked.
Didn't know it at the time, but they were the best.
