Not that it will help those going at it on the costs but here are some facts. I got these directly from the listing agent who was quoted in the Advocate story. This was related to me as part of discussions around a project we looked at working on together.
1. The house was previously under contract for $10 mill cash. Buyer had that money but backed out when his team did the numbers and found the annual upkeep to be outside his desired price range. This from a guy who had $10 mill to drop on a second house.
2. She didn't know the exact figure but it was between $500k and $1mill a year for upkeep.
3. The property requires daily upkeep due to landscaping and water features. Think daily cleaning, skimming, etc. Stuff that you can't do once a week.
4. The utilities are outrageous. No clue if this is just due to the size of the main house or the design or what but the electric bill was very high to keep the place at even a reasonably cool temp.
Those are just some things I got straight from the horses mouth. Make of them what you will.

Hey now! Don't get me involved in yalls ruckus. I was just offering some direct facts. Remember that the $1 mill number was at the top of that scale. Of course, whatever the number was, it was enough to scare off a guy with $10,000,000 in his wallet.

Yeh I would be very surprised if it was less than a million a year. Paula kept that house fully stocked and always ready for parties and events, as that was the reason she built the house in the first place.

So jb question, is your 500k-1mil number the straight cost to upkeep the place, or the amount Paula spent?

Wow...that blows my low-end guess of $300k right out the door.

No. That number was what the potential buyers team estimated it would cost him to keep the estate up and running per year maintenance and utilities wise. Nothing to do with parties, food, drink, etc. this was a "keep the lights on, grass cut and doors unlocked" cost.

Probably a dumb question but why did the Pennington lady sell?
She just built that house a few years ago.

Not sure exactly. Like I said earlier she built that house with the idea of hosting and trying to bring events to BR. Maybe it didn't come to fruition like she had hoped

Built it to show off and then found out that maintaining an estate is a PITA.

what kind of house are the pennington's living in now?

Fwiw: I worked on a bankruptcy case once where the guy filing had a 25,000 square foot home. His monthly bill total for up keep ranged between $35,000 - $45,000.

I didn't realize I put 2k... Meant 20k but I am way under after reading this thread. My parents water bill was 2k on 5k sq feet house. They have fountains and streams that they made

Was anybody living in the house recently? Or did the penningtons already move out

Are they foreign? Maybe that's bad for the neighborhood?

They have a full time maintenance supervisor for the house, he was the onsite project manager when the house was being built, his salary would probably be around 100K,
I talked to the HVAC contractor while the house was being built, if I remember correctly he said the house had almost 200 tons of AC, at the time we roughly calculated the electricity cost for the AC alone to be $10K a month.

They are going to build another house, she felt the architect they used took too many liberties with the design and it is not really what they wanted.
