An expedition in the South Pacific ocean funded by Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Paul Allen has discovered the wreckage of a famous US warship that was attacked by the Japanese during the second world war, claiming more than 600 lives.

The billionaire’s personal search team located the remains of the USS Juneau off the coast of the Solomon Islands on St Patrick’s Day.

The Juneau was sunk by Japanese torpedoes in November 1942, claiming the lives of 687 men, including five brothers known as the Sullivans from Waterloo, Iowa. The men became navy heroes and had a destroyer named after them.

There should be a lot more ships down there. It wasn't called "Iron Bottom Bay" for nothing.

there's some good books about that incident, was sunk in sight of other USN ships but they were under orders not to assist and to maintain radio silence

many of the few survivors were lost to Tiger sharks

Robert Ballard was being interviewed a few years ago and the interviewer half jokingly asked him about looking for JFK's PT 109. Ballard answered seriously that if you wanted to put enough resources into looking for it, you could probably find what was left of it, with the understanding that there wouldn't be much, since it was mostly wood.

There are regulations against it now, for that very reason.

There was a lot of naval action in those islands. A shite-ton of ships went down in multiple battles.

ETA

The First Battle of Savo Island, AKA the Battle of the Five Sitting Ducks

The Second Battle of Savo Island, AKA the Battle of Cape Esperance

The Third Battle of Savo Island, AKA the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal

The Fourth Battle of Savo Island, AKA the Battle of Tassafaronga

ETA for the downvoters.

Sunk war ships like this are graves now. He can't do anything with them. This is just an interest of his I guess.
