Beach cam is still up for me. Winds picking up slowly with more gusts, as is the rain. Water doesn't appear to have risen much just yet but the waves are getting much bigger as I type this.

ETA: WOW! Someone is there. Just wiped the cover with a red rag!

I am hoping there is some wind gust collection going on. The record for non-tornadic surface wind is currently 253 mph.

No chance IMO. Isn't it pretty common that sustained winds arrive far below the measured level? I know a lot of that is probably due to weakening, but in years of watching storms it seems far more common we're measuring a handful of gusts that approach the landfall sustained wind levels, and that the "gust" levels are never actually recorded at landfall.

There was an individual with an instrument able to take the measurements when the Labor Day hurricane struck. He retrieved it afterwards, sent it in to the weather people of the time, they tested it to make sure it had functioned properly, it had, so it's measurements became record. It was really just luck.

To the contrary with Camille, all such instruments we're destroyed when Camille made landfall so all of Camilles measurements at landfall are estimated. In fact camilles storm surge was reported by an eye witness based on a building that collapsed as higher than the official record.

I personally think Camille may have been stronger but we will never know.

I was in Boca Raton for Charley and Francis. Orange Beach on the beach for Katrina and Boyton Beach for Wilma.

Things are always scary whenever you are anywhere near them. Most scared I've ever been was actually living in Atlanta in 2004 when the remnants of Ivan came through spinning off tornadoes in every direction. Thought I was seriously fuct when one ripped through the wooded area directly behind the apartment I lived in.

The stronger it is, it needs more and warmer water and there are other factors especially cold and warm fronts, pressure systems, jet streams, winds and mountainous terrain for this hurricane.
