Don't know how long the card takes, but my book only took 3-4 weeks. I was impressed.

The card is nice to have if you need to replace your passport while overseas.

As I understand it, the Passport Card should be good for Isla Mujeres. The Passport card is for countries sharing a border with the contiguous US (Canada and Mexico). Isla Mujeres is part of Mexico. Were the island its own country, then the passport card would not suffice.

It used to be a lot longer than that, but I've heard they've gotten quicker (and you can pay a buttload and get it even faster than that). My last tourist passport was issued overseas, so it was unusually painful.

thanks for the in depth answer. That's all i was really asking.

And to be fair, i said Continental instead of Contiguous which i meant earlier.

I have both. I carry the card only as a backup in case I lose the book.

That way if I lose the book I at least will have a federally issued ID.

I am not sure how long it takes now, but applying ASAP is not too early if you are going at end of October and this is not a renewal.
