Just get the passport. You're already going through all the work, just get the real deal.

Why would they need a card just for traveling in the US?

The book allows you to enter via land, air, and sea.
Card is only via land, and sea.
Important if you are on a cruise and need to fly home in an emergency. Get the book.

Passport card is only good for Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean , and Bermuda. It can only be used for land and sea entry.
As long as if you don't travel by plane, you're good I would think.
I don't understand why people get the card. I guess if I lived in a border town and frequently traveled back and forth, it would be a more economical choice.

I'm getting the passport book,not even a question but i was just wondering how that would work.
The card is good for overland travel between the US, Canada, and Mexico and maritime ports of embarkation for Canada, Mexico, and many of the Caribbean nations (not entirely sure it covers all). The card is cheaper and doesn't take as long to process, but it strikes me as all but useless.

I've had a card (and passport) for close to 5 years. Travel to Canada 4-5 times a year. Sometimes I drive across and sometimes I fly in... I've used my passport card once. When I hand it to customs agents, they hand it back to me and ask for my passport.
It's a waste of money. Don't buy it.

When did the governments of Canada and Mexico start enforcing requirements for travel docs? I remember discussions about it but last time I lived here in late 2008 I was able to Canada with nothing but my driver's license, and there wasn't even a real checkpoint on the way out of the US into Mexico. The only enforcement was on re-entry.
