Why do you keep parroting that?
It was snark.
That is what he told me when I said that Hard Rock would be sued.

No, I’m saying y’all are dumb if you don’t think a company of this size on this size of a project doesn’t have significant insurance to cover this significant exposure. I would imagine the umbrella and reinsurance companies will be involved but there will be coverage for everything. If not, the owner deserves to pay out the arse.

I am kind of surprised that a building of that height is steel frame. I sell commercial concrete and most of my projects are high rise buildings going up in Atlanta. They are all concrete frame if the building is going to be more than 5 floors. I haven’t seen a steel frame over 6 floors be built in 20 years. It does look like the parking deck floors are post tensioned floors. Just surprised they didn’t go all the way to the top with PT.

Congrats on your game tonight. Orgeron's voice just gets deeper as his grin gets wider.

It was structural concrete for 8 levels. Originally the project was designed as structural concrete the whole way. During the VE phase they changed the top levels to structural steel. These developers are always trying to save a buck.

I’m not sure what you’re trying to say here but the strength of steel is 36,000psi while concrete is only 4000-5000. Steel is 10x stronger than concrete.

What does that have to do with my original comment?
The people injured/killed are going to get money from this. I never said a word about where it would come from or how.

There’s some shady fricking entities involved in this thing and tens of millions of dollars in potential losses. I’d be surprised if there’s sufficient coverage all around to cover it all. I guess we will see.

Better update the title..there are 2 dead now and 1 missing

The wrongful death suits alone might eclipse that rough number. Whoever gets left holding the bag on this (and their insurers) are going to take a bath. Not only do you have to consider the direct project losses, but there are going to be significant costs related to the damage done to nearby structures. Also, every local in that city who's ever walked down that street in the last twenty years is going to come forward claiming some kind of loss.

I'm honestly confused who or what is going to end up paying for all these potential claims ?
where is this money going to come from? serious question.

The land itself is probably worth a decent amount. Not sure how having a busted building on top of it changes things.

Good luck with that. The employers and statutory employers will pay a pittance in comp benefits to the families of the deceased.

Wrongful deaths will get paid out.
Everyone else might as well get in line and wait for the court to decide who gets pennies on the dollar because a lot of folks going broke on this.

Not to stir the pot here but thats apples and oranges. Most structural steel I beams have yield strdngths of 50,000 psi, and ultimate strengths well above that.
Concrete on the other hand functions differently.
To give you an idea of whats going on in the bigger picture, whenever something bends, one side is in tension, the other side is in compression. Concrete compressive stregth is only used on the compression side of the moment in the beam, and reinforcing bars are used in tension. Together they let a concrete slab or beam withstand high torques or moments in a slab.
For example a cantilever looks like this
So you can imagine what happens when concrete is put in tension (where it is very weak), it will break.

I am not an engineer, but I am pretty sure you can't fix that.

You know the City is somehow involved, permit given to somebody 's cousin who owns a steel company in some sort of kickback scheme. Could be steel, could be labor, could be the land it sits on but there will be some incompetence on the Citys part. 100%..we have seen this movie over and over...
Just wait for Lee Zurick break it, it will come out..
Very sad for the families who lost loved ones..
