Don't even think to suggest implosion.

We owned a brick building in the French Quarter built early 1800s. The first floor was three bricks thick, second and third were two bricks thick. The brick walls that formed the court yard were even older on two walls.

First the bricks back then were soft. Their strength was in how well they were laid (and the stucco that protected them). Their weakness was in the cement. Look up on exposed walls in the Quarter and you'll see where they have been tuckpointed. But tuckpointing can only go so deep and only from the exposed side.

Explode there? expect, hell guarantee, many other collapsed buildings.

I think someone mentioned earlier that there was some heavy weight being out on the edge of the structure recently because of material being staged

My child said multiple times last night the building was bulging and didn't look safe at 11:30 PM last night so I don't think this was a crane issue.

Is he a structural engineer or did he stay at the FQ Holiday Inn express last nighy?

Child may be part of the investigation if he really saw the walls bulging.

What exactly does bulging mean in this context?

Friend of mine owns a sub on the job and just posted this.

Update on the Hard Rock collapse: none of our employees were seriously injured (thank you Jesus!) but 4 employees went to the hospital as a precaution. Some of them had to jump off scissor lifts to avoid the collapse. No other information is available. Pray for the others involved in? this accident!

When Darth starts a thread there is usually substantial bulging.

Damn.

I guess I don’t have to say what that video reminds me of.

It’s two blocks from my church. We had a conf starting at 830. One of the people there is heading to my place to see my daughter. She parks at the noac. I’m sure she’ll have some news for me.

Project might just get cancelled. Lawsuits and fighting over liability will take forever.

IF there are only 4 fatalities on this, it would be a miracle.

Prayers to all involved in this catastrophe.

Not a structural engineer nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express.

My guess between the bulging and reports that a lot of material was staged on the collapsed side of the building for upcoming work tells me the guys laying out material either overloaded that part of the building and compromised the structure or something was wrong in the design and the structure couldn’t withstand as much weight as it was supposed to support.

In general, it just means that there were signs that the building was having trouble supporting the weight at least as far back as last night and that no one on the construction site appears to have noticed or considered it significant.
