A lot of people don’t know the true definition of “bullying.” First off, the bully has to have a distinct advantage, such as a noticeable size advantage or being outnumbered. In addition, it must take place over an extended period. So basically, if your kid is getting picked on by someone roughly the same size, it’s not considered bullying.

Advise him to hit the bully square in the nose
When TYson said everybody's got a plan until somebody hits em in the mouth, he should have said the nose. You can't underestimate the power of a nose punch to change someones determination and point of view.
Unfortunately, if you punch a seasoned boxer in the nose, it has much less effect. Or so my brother told me after he got the shite kicked out of him by a (unbeknownst to him) flyweight boxer (my brother is welterweight size). My brother hit him in the nose and he said the guy hit him harder and faster than he has ever been hit (my brother fought a bit as a younger man, kinda had a Napoleonic complex going on). Those guys are usually not high school bullies though.

I've already gone through this. My son received in-school suspension for taking on a kid who was bullying an autistic kid in the hallway. The bully started pushing and hitting the autistic kid, my son stepped in, knocked the bully down and told him if he did it again he was going to kick the shite out of him.
I understand why a school that size has a zero tolerance policy...it makes things black and white...which is much easier to administer. I'm glad that he stepped in for a kid who couldn't defend himself.

as long as he didnt throw the first punch I say he did nothing wrong and in regards to him getting bullied let him try to sort it out, if that dosent work go to the school yourself.

find a youth wrestling club near you and just eliminate the worry.

Not really bullying, but one of mine had a kid come up to him and start swinging because of something that happened during a volleyball game. Just typical middle school boys shite. He defended himself but showed restraint by not keeping on after he had gotten the upper hand. Still got suspended. I took him hunting while he was suspended.
Apparently he was supposed to stand there and let the other kid beat the shite out of him. I wondered if the principal would abide by his own rules if someone went up there and started smacking him around. These zero tolerance rules defy common sense. All they do is enable bullying. As mentioned above, I learned quickly when I was a kid that the best way to stop a bully is a well placed punch in the nose. Even if you get your arse kicked, they’ll move on to an easier target. I’m thankful that I grew up in a time and place where schools used some common sense, let kids work shite out on their own for the most part, and didn’t make a mountain out of a mole hill. At worst, you both got paddled by the principal or a coach and then you went back to class. Most of the time, you were buddies by the end of the day. Now there are cops, suspensions, etc. blowing it out of proportion. It’s silly.

Teach your kids how to fight. Plain and Simple. Put them in Jiu Jitsu, wrestling, and/or boxing.
If he knows that he can defend himself against anyone, it will give him the confidence and self-control needed to carry himself peacefully in most situations.

For my boys i told them frick that turn the other cheek bullshite. That shite dont work on bullies and you'll just get your arse kicked and teased relentlessly for being a wuss. Sometimes you gotta introduce them to thunder and lightening and earn that respect. Now for my daughter its different. First ill inform the school in the most polite form i can muster, trust me i can do polite. If that dont work and my little loving angel baby girl comes home crying cuz some little shitbag whose degenerate parents cant or wont teach him manners then ill have to protect my little girl. Thats what daddies do.

If he didnt start it I dont see the problem. If you punish him then the only thing you are teaching him now is that standing up for his self is wrong.

Tell him to make friends with bigger kids.

I do worry about my nephew. He's a weird kid. He may be on the spectrum. He's very kind, very funny, but when he gets to highschool, I can see him being a target.
His parents have him taking Krav Maga. But I think he needs some Cobra Kai type training.
