re: Parents, when did you first get your kid a phone/communication device?

when they started going and doing without us
This - it's not about age, it's about a reason to need one. When the first 2 started having to be at practices and other places without us, they got one. I love to take it away when they are annoying and I know they don't need it. Oldest one drives now, so that is a need. 3rd one is 12 but currently no activities we leave him at by himself, so he doesn't need one. And if you give a phone to an elementary school kid, you're an idiot.

Me and my siblings (except my little sister, she got one maybe when she was 12) all got one for our 16th birthdays. We were obviously the last ones in the class to get one and they were the crappiest of flip phones. And we most definitely got ridiculed for that.

Oldest got his in 6th grade because of sports with practice and games.
He takes it to school but doesn’t get on it, never had a problem.
If he misbehaves it’s the first thing to go and it charges in our room over night during the school week.
He has snap but it’s monitored and we use it as well to see his location.

We got our daughter one summer going into 9th grade, and it came with conditions.
No social media.
We own the phone and it can be taken away for any reason we decide.
The phone stays in the kitchen at night.
There are parental controls on the phone.
She is a responsible girl, but teenagers are teenagers.

My youngest is now a senior in high school. She got her first phone when she was 15 and starting 9th grade. I understand the need for communication and all but that phone and the social media battles that we’ve had with her has been difficult. One time caught a guy from school sending her porn. I about lost my mind. We keep a close eye on what she uses but even though phones are needed for communication, it has made parenting tough in a lot of ways. When I was growing up, there were no cell phones…in many ways, I wish we could go back to those days. All that to say, wait as long as you can…but unfortunately, they’ll get to a point where they’ll need it for school…schedule, reminds, etc…

Damn, we’ve come a long way from people thinking my parents were absolutely trash for getting me a pager when I started 8th grade.

No social media is allowed. My daughter is a freshman in HS and she still doesn’t have social media and he won’t have it either.

FWIW, neighbor's kid got busted w porn in 7th grade. His dad was proud and upset at the same time. Mostly proud bc it was straight porn instead of furry or LGBT.
I hate to admit it but that would be a bittersweet moment. I think I’d be willing trade for that knowing from 15 on we are ok.

I think he was 10. He carpooled every Monday night to LSU for orchestra practice. Sometimes it was college students from the other families taking him home from LSU and sometimes they were a little late. It was a great way for me to keep in touch with him there on the edge of Campus. Ugh.
In retrospect, I regret letting him be “by himself” after orchestra waiting in the dark outside of the music building.
I have no regrets about letting him have the phone. He was always a great kid. I loved that in high school they were not allowed to use phones at all during school time.
ETA: He told me there were a couple of times campus police asked what he was doing there at night. At least he was being watched sometimes.

When they were 12 so I could call them or they could call me. They've had tablets since they were probably 8 or so.
