Currently your son is a crybaby pussy. He will likely grow out of it before the end of summer.
He's adjusting to reality.

With my kid we focus on having fun. We make sure she understands gymnastics is to have fun, but if she wants to win, she has to put in the time. Gymnastics involves levels and the higher you are, the harder the skills. So at the beginning of the year we talk about having fun and understanding that if she wants to stay in a level lower and win she can do that. But if she wants to do the harder stuff at higher levels then she may not win much. It will be hard but we will help her get better every day. We talk about the little victories like learning new skills and don’t worry much about the meets.
She got blanked for the first time at her last meet. Big meet with lots of experienced teams. No medals. She walks up and says “I got my first taste of nothing”. I told her not to worry, if she keeps training hard she’ll win, most of those kids are way more experienced and been at the same level for multiple years. Asked her if it was fun and she said yes. Told her if she wants to stay in the same level and win this meet next year she can. She won’t. She likes the challenge.

I’ve got one that I’m dealing with right now wanting to quit every single time he’s facing defeat/adversity.
What is making him dwell on winning and not liking to deal adversity at such a young age?

Can you be more specific about the types of activities with which he is engaging? Team sports? Solo activities like learning a new instrument? All of the above?

What activity are you taking about? Baseball?
Pretty much anything....he can’t stand losing and throws fits.
But at the moment, it’s wrestling.

Go drop his arse off in the middle of a swamp and let him find his own way out. He'll either man up or you won't see that sissy boy again.

Individual sport or team sport? I’m more apt to let my kid quit an individual sport mid season. Team sport, never.
It’s individual and team all wrapped into one.

Then he needs to learn that if he cant accept losing at his age then he's going to have a rough life.....
He probably isn't even old enough to know the difference between winning and losing...and thats ashamed.

My oldest kid was the superstar. The youngest is a snowflake. You gotta be careful that you don't lose snowflake kids because the become weird outcasts with green hair and silver nasal jewelry if they aren't loved.

My youngest (of 3) is 22. I’m still waiting for the first failure, so I really don’t known the answer to your question.
I am only partially facetious- my kids have not really faced failure. School was always easy and they were good athletes in their chosen sport. I really don’t think they have learned perseverance. That is not quite true - my daughter has had some struggles in her graduate school research, but has worked through them herself - no input from me.
I really don’t have any advice, wish I did, but it will be the most important lesson your son learns. The truly great achievers in life fail often and succeed sometimes.

Or he could just start winning.
Loser attitude. Winners don't accept defeat, they let it fuel them.

For wrestling, did he know what he was getting into (amateur vs pro wrestling)?
