Son graduates in May and has already accepted a job at firm where he’s interned the last two summers.

Graduated LSU CE in 2022. Moved to Austin right after graduation. Like he said, our company is struggling to hire everyone, including new CE grads. Might need to make a move to a different state.

LSU?
If so he can intern (paid) with us this summer if he's interested in structural. I'll teach him how to use design and analysis software.
No, La Tech.
But he has a place to stay in BR for the summer. I know he's trying to get an internship at DOTD and has a couple other leads, but nothing lined up yet.

One graduated with Psychology degree, worked for two years in medical field then applied and went to Med school.
Other is at LSU in accounting and Internal Auditing & Cybersecurity Risk Management. He says companies fly in and interview them for internships. It is a 5 year program, but it looks like it’s very lucrative and grads are sought after. We will see.

A lot of substation design groups hire civil engineers and business is booming for those consultants. They do site work design and structural design.
My son graduated in EE and he went right to work full time with the consulting firm that he interned with last year.

I graduated during the post 9/11 slump. They might have to get a job, any job until the economy improves for young workers.

Problem is that house is worth 500k+ in Dallas.
And in a lot of the smaller towns I have lived in that house may be in the hood now.

Exactly this.
Here's a 1700 sq ft home not in the hood in alexandria, la. Not a good area. Just not in the actual hood.

230k. To live in Alexandria, LA. An out of date 1700 square foot ranch. In a town with virtually no job opportunities. That house (again, not in the hood) is likely 300k in Lake Charles, 350k in BR, and like the poster I'm replying to said, 500k in Dallas.
Houses for under $200k anywhere in the country you can reasonably find work now are actual shitholes or straight up dangerous.

did anyone post about a kid that's not doing so well or do they all have six figure jobs?
Posted on 2/25/25 at 8:18 pm to GreatLakesTiger24
No. All our kids are kicking arse. Mine have better lifestyles than me. That’s the sound of winning.

Daughter graduated from UF last spring in computer science. Interviewed and was offered positions at several different companies. She didn’t confine herself strictly to computer science positions, though. She also focused on business administration opportunities. She considered consulting type positions in Miami, Atlanta and Boston as well as some civil service software development type positions - one for data testing in support of military warfighting missions and another doing something similar, I think in AZ? She ended up turning those down as she eventually decided that the computer science field might not offer broad enough options for her in the future. Ultimately she chose to take the highest paying offer with the most bennies, which ended up being in global operations with a company in JAX. She seems happy with it so far. Has her own apartment, is paying all of her bills herself and is even regularly socking away some $ for the future, so we can’t complain.
Son, on the other hand, is a bit more of a challenge - he is aiming to get his PhD in neuroscience and is currently waiting to hear if and where he will hopefully be accepted. Still helping out with some of his bills until he finally gets fully settled somewhere - crossing our fingers.
