Same thing with schools. Kids used to leave school and walk home or to their parent's cars. Now we have carpool lanes with signs to show we are getting the right kid. In elementary school I would hop in random friend's parent's cars all the time. Go home with my key and stay home until I got my brother from his bus and then wait for my parents.

Thought nothing of it. Never thought nothing of taking the bike six blocks to K&B either. Though I will admit things are different now. I'm just glad I grew up then. Plus social media is ruining kids but that's a whole other thread.

Her post is great except for thinking people didn't judge in the past. They did but it wasn't broadcast all over the world. It's possible there was less judgement. Who knows. Would have to go find some surveys or polls from back then.

Every single aspect of raising a child is now picked apart. I saw an interview with an older lady with 9 or so kids. She mentioned that she felt bad for current mothers because we are bombarded with so much information and stressed about it to the max. Back then they asked a couple neighbors and that's it. I never knew how mean other moms could be until I became one and desperately searched the internet for answers. Sanctimommies are real. I think It happens for dads but not as much. They don't judge nearly as much as women. It has made me be very conscious about smiling at and supporting every parent I see. 99% of us are trying the best we can.

Are they really or do we just get informed more often about bad stuff happening? I have two little girls and I dont know how I'm going let them play freely in the neighborhood in a few years with out being a nervous wreck but its better than them being couped up all the time. If my parents would not have let me roam all summer I would've just sat around playing Sega all day.

I agree with the basic premise of the article, but I bet people were blaming and shaming then too. They just didn't have social media and the OT to prove they were giant shitheads to the world (see: Snipe).

This is a life changing event for this entire family. I feel for that mother and father. Some of yall need to put your stones away. Me and my wife buried our infant son in 1988. It's the worst and most hopeless feeling imaginable. When I got home from work yesterday my wife told me about this story. We got in the truck and spent the rest of the evening loving on two of our little grand babies.

It was hard for me at first. The first few times I let them play outside without me I was pacing the floor and checking on them every two minutes. But I firmly believe that kids need that time alone with other kids to forge their own identities and become more independent. They're going to leave my house one day and my job is to prepare them for that. Plus, it's just fun for them and I don't want them to sacrifice the kind of childhood I had over every possible once in a million scenario. I don't let them run wild but I try not to hover either. It can be difficult to do as a parent.
