No you're the one who thinks because brogue were originally created for outdoor wear that means they are inherently less formal today.
I think that because it's correct.

Which I can promise you is an incorrect assessment of today's formality in menswear (surprising coming from a person who lives in NYC).
No, it's not. They're less formal. The fact that they may be wore with a suit does not change that assessment.

brogue is formal.

Judging by your photo, this is an amusing comment.

Brown oxfords are for sure. Loafers can be hit or miss depending on what you get

OK. Wear them with a tux then, farmer Ted.
Of course a tuxedo should never be worn with anything other than patent leather black oxfords.
But thank you for dropping this comment was expecting and waiting for it

OK. You've grasped the concept that color can have something to do with shoe formality. That's great. Go back and read the brogue chapter too and you'll be caught up with the rest of us.

A brown oxford that is brogue is about as formal as a brown shoe can get.
Negative. Brogue is inherently less dressy.
This.

Ok I will read up on it. Maybe my opinion will change.
Just out of curiosity, what brand of formal shoes do you like the most?

The Fine Young Gentleman says you can wear loafers with a suit, though this is practiced mostly in America.
Gentleman's Gazette says the same thing.
Even the vaunted GQ UK says it's ok.
As for brogues, they are less formal the more broguing they have.. Unless you are going to a Scottish wedding. Then wear ghillie brogues:
All of this to say: in my opinion, the American fashion sense has changed dramatically and moved away from the traditional sense of what is and what is not appropriate to wear with a suit. The only constant that I have seen in American menswear with regard to shoes and the type of suit-wear the man has on is the wearing of patent leather shoes with a tuxedo, whether white or black tie, tailed or no. Always wear patent leathers with a tuxedo.
Gentleman's Gazette says the same thing.
quote:
The Loafer is a piece of footwear that straddles the two worlds of casual and a more formal style, making it quite a unique piece in that respect. No matter what you read, a loafer is never a truly formal shoe because of its casual heritage.
Gucci loafers are often combined with all sorts of outfits. Of course, using a black, polished box calf leather with leather lining and refining the shape make the loafer more formal than an off white, unlined Gucci summer loafer in suede but at the end of the day, it is still a loafer and not suited for tuxedos or white tie ensembles. Likewise, it is historically not appropriate to wear one with a classic three piece business suit because it is simply too casual. On the other hand, a casual suit will look just fine with tassels.
Even the vaunted GQ UK says it's ok.

Huh?
How is he incorrect. You posted a picture of yourself wearing brogue oxfords with very casual pants, which would make sense.
