Media writing doesn't use the oxford comma. They follow AP style.

I think the use of the oxford comma is entirely dependent on what you're writing.

This doesn't help your argument.

There is no argument.

You won't find the oxford comma used in media writing- newspapers, magazines etc.

I don't think any of it matters unless you are being graded and your teacher wants it a certain way.

I used to use the comma before and in lists, but they started teaching that you didn't need it. I eventually left it out because I thought it looked better.

I judge people who don't use it.

Of course the Oxford comma is necessary and important, and people who fail to use it are morally bankrupt. (OK, maybe I am exaggerating a little.) I had a student years ago who would refuse to use the Oxford comma. I would correct her papers, but she would not use the Oxford comma. Some previous high school teacher taught her that it was incorrect to use the Oxford comma, and she was impervious to efforts to teach her the right way to write.

The Oxford comma can have some serious implications, as suggested in this story:

I majored in Communication (Public Relations) and we wrote in AP Style.
