Oxford commas a very important, IMO, and in the opinion of the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.

Oxford Comma Dispute Is Settled as Maine Drivers Get $5 Million
quote:

Ending a case that electrified punctuation pedants, grammar goons and comma connoisseurs, Oakhurst Dairy settled an overtime dispute with its drivers that hinged entirely on the lack of an Oxford comma in state law.

The dairy company in Portland, Me., agreed to pay $5 million to the drivers, according to court documents filed on Thursday.

The relatively small-scale dispute gained international notoriety last year when the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit ruled that the missing comma created enough uncertainty to side with the drivers, granting those who love the Oxford comma a chance to run a victory lap across the internet.

My co-worker refuses to use it.

Ain't no impasse that a meetup at Sonic couldn't fix. Just post which Sonic will be used.

The Oxford comma is stylistic, period. For example, you won't find them in AP style writing. While not quite a perfect analogy it is similar to tabs and spaces for coding.

It is not stylistic. Statements are confusing and unintelligent without it.

I always do this. I know it's unnecessary, but it's how I was taught and it's how I will continue to type.

Until it's not.

LACK OF OXFORD COMMA COULD COST MAINE COMPANY MILLIONS IN OVERTIME DISPUTE

quote:

A class-action lawsuit about overtime pay for truck drivers hinged entirely on a debate that has bitterly divided friends, families and foes: The dreaded — or totally necessary — Oxford comma, perhaps the most polarizing of punctuation marks.

What ensued in the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, and in a 29-page court decision handed down on Monday, was an exercise in high-stakes grammar pedantry that could cost a dairy company in Portland, Me., an estimated $10 million. […]

The debate over commas is often a pretty inconsequential one, but it was anything but for the truck drivers. Note the lack of Oxford comma — also known as the serial comma — in the following state law, which says overtime rules do not apply to:

The canning, processing, preserving, freezing, drying, marketing, storing, packing for shipment or distribution of:

(1) Agricultural produce;

(2) Meat and fish products; and

(3) Perishable foods.

The dairy company argued that “packing for shipment” and “distribution” were two different items in the list; the truck drivers argued that it was just one item: “packing for shipment or distribution”.

The only time I do not use Oxford commas and two spaces after periods is on RFQ responses with strict page limits. All the additional characters start to add up thru the document.
