You’re the best, Iona. That is helpful and although this happened in April 2023 prior to the law being passed, I’m going to reference it when talking with them.

What internet award are you trying to win here?

I’m not trying to win an internet award, I’m telling you that you’re likely wasting your time and effort trying to fight this much further. By all indications, you needed care and were given it. I pay for health insurance too and hate the concept of in vs out of network as much as anyone, done even get me started on receiving out of network services at an in network facility, but there’s nothing either of us can do about it.

like I mentioned earlier.

Do you know who called the ambulance? Shouldn’t they be on the hook?

Answer this:
If I call and order pizzas delivered to Aspy’s house, unbeknownst to her? Who’s on the hook for the service?

He directly answered the question and made a very good point

You are defending predatory billing practices by expecting a pregnant person just coming out of unconsciousness that didn't calls 911 herself to be thinking about insurance network coverage of the ambulance she didn't request?

That's the really good point?

She could refuse delivery just like the OP could have refused the ambulance ride

That’s what you should do. Tell them the legislature has spoken and rather than fighting this in court you’re willing to pay half (or whatever you think is best).

Good luck and nice seeing you!

Someone in this very thread did something about this

I’ll reply—

I woke up to a room of people standing over me, the one directly over me giving care was an MD. She said “the ambulance will be here any second” and continued taking vitals and asking for medical history (which includes HELLP syndrome and if you’re familiar, you do not mess around with this) from my then husband. Ambulance rolled in literally maybe a minute later because they were literally a block away. This was in downtown Sonoma. The hospital was then about 4/5 blocks away. So yeah, it happened fast and in that situation I was in no condition to turn down an ambulance. But, I also had no reason to reconsider the ride since I had never experienced the predatory nature of their business.

The entire concept of "in network" or "out of network" for ambulances, or even ER's, is ridiculous.

Same with CRNAs. You're never asked what CRNA you want to use, the hospital just assigns one to your case. Hopefully they are in network!

It's so stupid.

What state do you live in?

If it's not California, I would tell them to frick off. At best, I would offer them a settlement. Maybe half, or less, now and write off the rest.

So you’re telling us the time between the ambulance being called and arriving was 2 minutes

I actually didn’t think they were allowed to let past due medical bills impact credit anymore?

Ironically that changed today because of a court ruling saying it was not legal.

That she was awake and had several minutes to decide whether to take the ambulance or not.

Yes that is a very good point in the context of this conversation and has precisely to do nothing to do with predatory bidding…. Dumbass

Yea, I posted in this thread about getting a colonoscopy in-network, with out-of-network anesthesia.
