They do not pay property taxes
We do a lot of work for a non-profit hospital system and everything we do is done tax free to them.
They’re probably our biggest account.

It’s really sad. Doctors these days don’t care about helping people they’re just in it for the money

OT’s thoughts on volunteer workers at huge hospitals

Those dammed volunteers doing terrible things
quote:
For the last year and a half, 81-year-old Louis Mapp has been rocking babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at USA Children's and Women's Hospital in Mobile, Alabama.
The NICU relies on volunteers to spend time with premature babies whose parents can't be there 24 hours per day. Mapp is more than happy to help. Every Tuesday, he rocks, feeds, and burps, any baby who needs a little TLC.

It’s amazing how many staff members are volunteers considering the hospital is making bank. I can understand the volunteers are retirees and gives them something to do and a feeling of worth and care etc.

At Scruffy’s hospital, within the entire children’s system, there are probably 10 or 15 max.
Their jobs usually consist of reading books to kids, holding babies in the NICU or nursery, or handing people maps.
Most are just retirees who really enjoy it, or future med students.
They are non-essential and would likely not exist at all if people didn’t volunteer to do them.
People, like the OP, go about their lives complaining about things that don’t even impact them and then try to ruin things for others who are actually involved.
They then pat themselves on the back.
In other words, the OP sounds like Gravy.

do not accept Medicaid
To be eligible to take Medicare you have to take a certain number of Medicaid. I would love to work somewhere that didn’t take Medicaid at all though.

Have you asked them their thoughts?
Are you smarter than they are, Gravy?

quote:My answer to scruffy is that none of them appeared to be concerned or disappointed with their volunteer status. Their sense of community and helping others is what is being taken advantage of. I don't really GAF tbh, and Im not anti corporate America at all. It was just an observation/thought I had this morning when I was at the hospital.

That evil USA Children's Hospital suckered Mr. Mapp in to volunteer then donate over $1M to the NICU.

As much as I'm not crazy about Ochsner, they're doing some serious expanding and updating..
I had a family member there recently for a few days. I hadn't been over there in 5-6 years. It has gotten huge. Tons of employees, tons of people in there... and holy cow the number of med students. I felt like I was watching Grey's Anatomy. Every time a high-level doctor came into the room, there were 14 med students behind him or her, taking notes.
To have a big teaching hospital like that, I felt happy for the region.
The entire concept of a for-profit hospital is weird to me, so as long as they are putting money back into care, I'm good with it.

So, no one who actually does it cares.
Once you poll every volunteer in America then let us know what % cares or not.
