We have a gate like that. However, our gate simply separates the porch from the pool.
Ours did the same, no need to have it go all the way around if you have a screened in patio.

One thing nice about this temporary fences is they can be taken down and stored for the offseason. So basically it's only up while not in use from May - early September.
Not following this logic, why wouldn't you keep the fence up year round?

No doubt....fence should be up 24/7/365. Kids don't take days off.

We had a pool alarm to detect entry into the water. It had many false alarms so I don't recommend it.
Our best solution was always keep the doors locked to the patio with the house alarm set to chime if a door got opened.

The actual best solution happened on it's own...

We were all outside in winter and kids were running around - youngest chased a ball to keep it from going in - and fell into the pool. Water temp was about 60, and I yanked him out immediately - but that solved the problem of him ever going too close to the pool as a toddler.

He learned a valuable lesson. He never had any fear of the water- but definitely respected the boundary. He's 15 today and a great swimmer.

I have a fence just like the picture in the OP, we just got it installed a month or so ago and it is probably the best decision we have made

How much does that cost (ballpark)? I've got a 14 month old and a pool. We've got a big deck that I could put a gate on the stairs of, but there are spots under a bench on the deck where he could climb off of the deck into flowerbeds if he really tried and get to the pool that way. He'll be taking swimming lessons as soon as it is warm enough

While it may not look great aesthetically, there is no doubt in my mind that it is a good idea to have something around your pool for a few years with kids that age.

Totally agree. Even if your kids can swim, they will have friends over who can't or their siblings.

2 kids drowned in the past week in Metro NOLA, right?

Just drain the pool after each use.

So they fall 10 feet onto concrete?

We had one just like the OP but just straight across, not all that around. It cost around $500-600 if I recall.

swiming lessons. serious.. didnt read every response so already mentioned i assume.

If you're going to own a pool, your children need to learn how to swim. That's a no-brainer, but it isn't 100% foolproof. Here's my really shitty, child drowning story ...

Mom stops at grocery after picking up kids from school. Four children between ages 3 or 4 and about 10. Gets home and starts unloading groceries, with the three older children helping. Youngest is still strapped in a car seat/booster seat. Finished unloading groceries and takes youngest inside the house. Older kids off to their rooms or watching TV. Putting away groceries w/ toddler and notices the dog is outside and barking, that had been inside. Goes out to shut the dog up and finds ~6 year old in the pool. The child could swim, but apparently not well enough with clothes and shoes on.

While unloading groceries, one of the older kids had unlocked a sliding glass door to let the dog out and then closed the door. At some point, the 6 year old went out of the door, closed it behind him and some how ended up in the pool.

They had been home probably less than 10 or 12 minutes when the child was found. He couldn't have been in the pool for more than 8 or 10 minutes. Mom starts CPR right away and gets the 10 year old to call 911. Fire Dept was there quickly and they were able to resuscitate the child. Was breathing at the hospital, but he was brain dead. Pulled the plug a couple of days later. Needless to say, it fricked all of them up.

We’ve used a pool alarm before. Any splash sets the alarm off in the house.

Protectachild.com fencing is what you are looking for I believe. We had it installed and it has been great. You can find a local installer on their website.

We had one like that when my children were young. When they got older, we stored it in our garage. I highly recommend it. We eventually sold the house to a young family. The buyers were very happy we had this safety feature.

Teach them how to swim ASAP!! That's what we did and never leave a child unattended in or around a pool.

I left mine unattended all the time. It was the only way we were going to know for sure if she would live or die if she fell in. Otherwise, what's the point?
