While I think that picture is pretty funny, it’s not completely fair to the US. We were bankrolling Britain, France and Russia. But especially Britain.

The marginalization of the Tzar was already in progress prior to WW1. But I suppose it is possible that he could still be there as a constitutional monarch if WW1 hadn't happened.

I’ve probably listened to the series 4-5 times.

I listen to it probably once every 6 or so months.

The war was happening.. Europe was transitioning away from imperialism and a breakup of empires.. The industrial revolution and all the new toys brought to the battlefield made this inevitable

If only Ferdinand had been killed months earlier in a hunting accident with with Duke of Portland in Nottinghamshire, England

quote:

During his stay the Archduke had a brush with death which could have turned these later events on their head.

As recalled in his memoirs Men, Women and Things, the Duke of Portland was out shooting pheasants with Franz Ferdinand when:

"One of the loaders fell down. This caused both barrels of the gun he was carrying to be discharged, the shot passing within a few feet of the archduke and myself.

"I have often wondered whether the Great War might not have been averted, or at least postponed, had the archduke met his death then and not at Sarajevo the following year."

Despite the narrow escape, the couple stayed for a week before continuing their travels.

On 28 June 1914, during a visit to the Bosnian capital, Franz Ferdinand and Duchess Sophie were shot dead by nationalist Gavrilo Princip.

I’ll say this, Tzar Nicholas didn’t even want the job, he knew he wasn’t a good man for the job and Russia had been a powder keg for a long time on its last legs.

Very true. I was moreso thinking that it's possible there is no Bolchevik revolution. Which is partially what pitted the US and USSR against one another in the first place.

Without WW2, the state of Israel likely doesn't get created. Tensions in the middle East wouldn't be where they are today.

Hell, maybe 9-11 doesn't happen.

It is possible that Israel still happens. The influx of jews into Palestine with western backing started in WW1. Jewish leaders alligned themselves with Britain largely with this purpose in mind.

And then ...

The total number of military and civilian casualties in World War I, was around 40 million. There were 20 million deaths and 21 million wounded. The total number of deaths includes 9.7 million military personnel and about 10 million civilians.

In the end, around 4,000,000 soldiers were mobilized and 116,708 American military personnel died during World War 1 from all causes (influenza, combat and wounds). Over 204,000 were wounded and 757 U.S. civilians died due to military action.

He had the best of intentions but got little to no support from his government once the war was won and they didn't need the Ottoman's anymore.

The sad thing is, there had been an attempt on his life earlier in the day and he was going to the hospital to see the injuries from that attack when he was killed.

Craziest coincidence in modern human history.

Car breaks down right next to one of the guys who previously failed to kill them.

I have no doubt his intentions were pure... just the problems started to manifest

It's impossible to imagine. If WW1 doesnt happen, then WW2 doesn't happen; also the Tzar might still be controlling Russia, which negates the cold war. If WW2 doesn't happen, then the US doesn't create the bomb, the US doesn't skyrocket to super power status, the old guard would still be of much importance.

The ottomans are also sitting on the fattest stack of oil in the world.

WEI was always going to happen. Whether it was in 1914 or 1924, everyone saw it coming.

Actually that's not entirely true. The prevailing thought at that time that a general European war between major powers was impossible due to how interwoven they'd become from an economic standpoint. For all their military rivalries the major powers of Europe were very much tied together via trade. For example Germany was a major trading partner to Great Britain, at time perhaps their largest trading partner other than the US.

When the heir to the Austro-Hungarian crown was killed in 1914, most Europeans thought what was to come was another localized Balkan War similar to the ones that had been fought numerous times, including one just one year prior.

plus the fact that all of the monarchs in Europe at the time were related in 1 way or another

I believe the King of England & the German Kaiser were cousins

His dying words,

quote:

As reported by Count Harrach, Franz Ferdinand's last words were "Sophie, Sophie! Don't die! Live for our children!" followed by six or seven utterances of "It is nothing," in response to Harrach's inquiry as to Franz Ferdinand's injury.
