Low impact Steady State training. Think slow arse job on the treadmill or elliptical.

This is me. I'd like to lose some blubber, but mainly I'm working on my heart rate. My knees & ankles hurt every frickin day and I feel like a treadmill is about all I can do right now. I can't go hard so I try to go long, as in minimum of 60 minutes non stop.

Try the stationary bikes. I can get my heart rate a lot higher on a bike than a treadmill. And there is little to no impact.

I would do some bodyweight squats.

I have pain in my left knee and after some twists and body squats it starts feeling better. A couple minutes of that and I'm doing pistol squats like a champ.

Right, you're eating less calories

My cals stay pretty constant, carb cycle or not, they are within 150 of each other when on a cut.

It is, but the high carb days also play a role in the maintaining of the muscle as well as fueling your workout

I've been back on the 5X5 SL routine for about 2 1/2 months now after about 3 months of not lifting and I'm practically back to where I was before I stopped. On workout A days I'll do the 5x5 sets and then do more related exercises involving the same muscle groups, and the same for workout B days. The day after one of the SL routines I'll work different muscle groups than the previous day i.e. (A followed by Bis/Tris/Core; B followed by Back/Legs). For cardio I like playing pick up basketball (med-high intensity) 2-3 days per week for about 2 hours or more depending on if there's enough people for 5 on 5. I've also cut out protein shakes and other supplements and replaced them with a high protein diet appropriate for my weight and size [6'1 190]. I haven't noticed much of a difference in strength since cutting out supplements, but some of my lifts (bench) are starting to plateau. I like following the SL routine, but I wonder if it's time to switch to another workout to increase my maxes. What would you recommend?

if you aren't making progress I would switch to greyskull lp and do a reset. Milk it for everything it is worth then move onto 531.

That wasn't the point... You confirmed that you're eating less calories. How many of those carbs contain fiber too?

The excess protein is far less likely to be wasted too. So on the days you're not eating as many carbs and eating more protein, that's going towards muscle retention

Can you help me with this, bro?

quote:

Today I need an alternative for seated calf raises and leg press calf raise.

I try to do seated calf raises with dumbbells but I honestly don't feel anything when I do them.

And, I can't find a good alternative for the leg press calf raise online.

I guess I can just do standing calf raises with dumbbells again. Maybe change it up by turning my toes in?

I don't have a gym membership anymore and this workout is tonight. It's Week 1, Day 4 of that Jim Stoppani's 12 Weeks to Size. Tonight is Shoulders/Traps/Calves. I'm having issues with the calf portion.

Like a couple others said try an airdyne bike, rower or just a bodyweight circuit. you should be able to do some HiiT even with the pain on the airdyne or rower.

5x5 is the worst workout possible if you want to lose weight.

know you are trying to do it all from home, but even on a tight budget, that $10 fitness center people call planet fitness isn't that expensive

But let's face it, it's a gym for women. No bench presses, no free weights above 55 pounds, no working out hard. Ton of cardio machines though. I never went back because that type of workout gym is definitely not my preference.

True, but if he doesn't have much at home, at least there's machines he can utilize
Best of all, when he can afford to go to an actual gym, he can set of the lunk alarm on purpose

The machines are pretty good, and it's very clean. I love their pullup station.

Experience and all the weight lifting literature I've read, really. If there is a way to use a primary 5x5 workout program to shred some pounds, I'm all ears.
The way that I look at it:
3-5 is power building
8-10 is strength
12-15 shred

On the bodyspace app, I'm doing a "spring clean" weight loss program which is primarily shredding, and my program doesn't ever have me going below 8 reps on anything. HIIT training works well with my shredding workouts.

If I wanted size, I'd probably do a lot of doubles on the bench press or some kind of other workout that aimed for high volume and low reps.
