Are Citizen Eco-Drive watches good watches? I am in need of a black leather band dress watch (for tuxes/black suits) because I hate wearing my silver TAG a lot.

Would a watch enthusiasts look at a Citizen Eco-Drive and scoff and murmur “NOOB” to his fellow watch dorks? I want decent street cred here.

To me the ultimate black suit watch is a NOMOS. Basically a Bauhaus style simple watch with very nice lines, no clutter at all.
They're kind of spendy, ~$2k, but many companies make very nice homages.
Stowa makes their Antea look like it, and I'm sure it's super nice.

Really tricky if you could match the shoes to your watch bands.

Yeah that's great, but I wanted a much much cheaper price because I rarely wear black shoes/black belt.

I wear brown, burgundy brown, or light brown shoes 90% of the time.

And can you answer my original question?

Are citizen eco-drive watches scoffed at in the watch community?

Or is it respectable and reliable?

Just depends on whether it has good style or not. They make a quality product, many of them just look bad...to me.

Gotcha.

Quality is all I'm wondering about. I've got plenty of faith in my style. I agree, they have a lot of ugly ones. I am thinking very, very simple.

Ordered a Nomos Tangente 38mm a few weeks back.

Stowa makes a very good one as well, just wanted my first in house movement.

You buy different leather watch straps and change them out. Belt, watch, shoes...you only need one dress watch. There are many great homages, check this one out.

The Rodina is one of the first watches that caught my eye when I first started looking into them

Thanks. That's been on my list for a while. I keep telling myself I'm done...but you know how that is.

They're good quality watches and many of them look good. Almost all watch snobs own either a citizen Eco drive or seiko automatic

I save my nicest leather band for special occasions, but I'm looking for an intermediate quality one to put the Stowa logo clasp I bought with the watch.

Worn and Wound looks to have some pretty awesome straps. I'll probably buy my next from there.

Your best bet is to get on a watch forum and find one of the hundreds of custom strap makers.

You can snag a Hamilton Intra-matic for about $500 on the grey market. Really cool "dress" watch for the price.

Also, that Nomos is awesome...I really like the Ahoi.

Gaston, some time last year or the year before, you posted a link and information for a German watch company that sold for $100-$200 IIRC.

I have been trying to search for it with no luck.

I believe the website had German text if that helps.

My opinion:

The vast majority of people who are interested in watches enough to ever notice what you're wearing on your wrist will be sophisticated enough to appreciate the value represented by a Seiko or Citizen watch.

My "collection" runs the gamut from Rolex to Seiko and I love them all and wear whatever I want to.

Also, anyone who would say something like that is not someone whose opinion you need to give a shite about anyway.

Post us a pic of the watch you ended up buying.
