OT veterinarians, Heartgard got my dog stoned

My new puppy got her first treatment of Heartgard today. She is nearly 9 weeks old but only weighs 1.1 lbs.
The vet gave us her first dose, which is good for dogs up to 22 lbs. I was a little concerned about the large dose, it was basically the size of a meal we give her. I called the vet to verify and she said yes, it will be ok.
I gave it to her at 2pm today and she has basically been asleep since 3 pm.
Has my dog O.D.'ed on heartworm medicine or will it wear off by morning?

She's alert, looks around when I pick her up, and walks straight back to her bed and goes back to sleep.
Before this dose, her routine was sleep 1-2 hours, play/eat/shite/piss 1-2 hours, and then back to sleep. Not sleep for 10 hours straight.

I find my puppy was sensitive to medicine also. Every time she had her shots are her heart worm pills she would sleep like that. I don’t think it’s a big concern I would just watch her make sure she isn’t vomiting uncontrollably. Trust when I say this.. enjoy these sleepy moments because when she wakes up she will be like a mini tornado

So she isn't shitting uncontrollably, staggering, or having convulsions but is just sleeping a bunch. Suck it up.

This is a common issue. My dog had the same problem the first time he took it. I freaked out but my vet wasn't worried since it's a known issue with this brand/medicine. Just watch your dog and let your vet know.
Your dog will build up a tolerance to it. I like heartgard. Also take a look at nextgard as well for flea prevention.

I couldn’t get my puppy to eat the heartguard pill until I slather it in peanut butter. This is the same dog that eats mulch...

My dog wouldn't eat it which leads me to believe it's not good shite. I do the shots for heart worms and nexgard for fleas. When I want to get him stoned I use this.

Probably also got vaccines at the same time. Much more likely the vaccines are making her feel sleepy. Likely back to normal the next morning.

I give my 80lb lab trifexis which is similar to heartgard and I can always count on him being a bum the rest of the day

Be careful using Heartguard with collies, particularly Border Collies and Australian Shepherds. They can have serious adverse reactions to Ivermectin, the active ingredient in Heartguard.
If you are smart, you can buy sheep Ivermectin on the cheap and use it in lieu of Heartguard. My sister has about 45-50 foxhounds at any one time, and she pays about the same to give Ivermectin to her hounds as I do to give Trifexis (no Ivermectin) to my two dogs.
