yeah that meme of (1) marginalized groups self-adopts a term (2) accepts it as a part of their cultures and then (3) flips out when the dominant group uses the very term in the exact way intended by the marginalized group, except negative, is scary (but cracks me up)

trash cultures try to self-identify to separate themselves from the dominant culture, and then when the dominant culture is like "ok we'll call you what you want, but do it b/c you're not part of our culture" it's seen as a bad thing. it really is hilarious

this isn't just done by black trash culture. white trash loves calling themselves rednecks or white trash in jest, but if you're proper and do it, "them's fighting words". this is actually kind of on full display with the confederate flag bullshite.

please note: this above example in no way is abut the "n-word". that was originally the opposite, where it was pejorative towards a marginalized group and they took it as a self-identification to try to "own" it and take power away. please don't bring up that stupid example.

Your example of thug is perfect and exactly what was thinking about.

"Animal" is one that it seems will be next.
