I bought a couple of those survival meal buckets from costco. That should get me through.

However, I imagine that there will be a lot of traffic on the river after a catastrophe, people who own canoes who are desperate to relocate but too afraid to travel the highways.

Your family island would certainly be a stopping point for several boats, and some of those travelers may not be friendly.

What would you do if your island hideout was discovered? Would you be willing to permanently silence your foe?

Good question, kills.

It may get some traffic and your scenario could very well happen. Since it is in the middle of nowhere, it may get passed by. There are only a few places easily accessible from the river - some of the bank has eroded into small cliffs and such. The harder thing would be developing some kind of early warning system, though. Any ideas?

Since I would hope that my family would be with me, I would have no problem doing what it takes to silence a foe. Heck, may even put up some booby traps, too.

Most of us would die from lack of medical supplies no matter what fantasy plan we have in our head. Yey for happy endings.

Go full on mad max. Steal one of those 18-wheeler tanker trucks full of fuel. Build a compound. Turn it into BarterTown.

Who own's Bartertown?

Well, since I'm already stocked with what I need for a major earthquake I think I'm pretty well set. Lots of acreage to bug out to, good water supply, plenty of building materials and food to hunt.

The key is to realize early that things aren't returning to normal in the short term. I saw this at Katrina. People just assume/hope that the situation isn't a big deal. I think the key is to do something right away to prepare for the long-term. It's too late when everyone else is panicking and snatching up all the supplies.

This all assumes some type of natural situation that happens slowly. Like an epidemic. The real nut-cutting would be when there was a true overnight catastrophe that was more than regional in nature. Think a large meteor strike or large-scale nuclear war.

That scenario would be the scary one.

I could most definitely help you with a solid security plan as long as my family is allowed sanctuary on your island.

I already have multi early warning plans.

Very true, this is why I have a random reminder set on my phone for every 2-3 weeks to loot the nearest store by me. Just in case something goes down, I'll have my looting done.

Actually, most of us will die from starvation within the first month following a total collapse of our society.

But you are correct in that more will die from lack of medical supplies and treatment.

Fortunately for me our family has 3 doctors (uncle, aunt, and cousin) and 3 nurses (all first cousins) who plan to "bug out" back to the family farm in a long term survival situation.

I'm sure it's already been said, but if I told ya, I'd have to kill ya. I have a few isolated places I can retreat to if need be. Not to mention guns, ammo, food, water, and gasoline.

Since it all depends on the type of catastrophe I don't know how you would plan for it. First need in a variety of these scenarios would be water and then food. After that shelter. That's my plan, solve those three first.

That would most certainly be doable. As I said, even though it is fairly large for a river island, it has only a few easily accessible points.

It is large enough for several families to live and defend. Keeping roving bands/marauders out wouldn't be all that hard given the right plans.

Ever seen the movie "Southern Comfort" about the guardsmen in the swamps? Some of those traps would work wonders.

Now I am not sure about letting every soul in, but maybe we could get a small TD clan.

Please share some of your plans!
