Fairly recently the government commissioned a study about the effects of a long term power grid failure due to an EMP attack.

Government "experts" predict mass riots after 1 week, mass starvation by the end of the first month (upwards of 80 percent of population).

The grid wouldn't be restored for years.

You will be skinned alive if you mutter "Mizzou sucks arse sweat" upon approach to the island.

Fair warning.

Spaceman,

Serious question: How does your island fare during floods or high water? Has there every been a time when the island was submerged due to flooding?

My plan is to go to pimp my services as an electrical engineer who can keep a dam operating for the right price. Who needs powah?

Actually I would probably be acquired by whatever is left of the government and stuck in one of our plants til we got that shite back online and keep it online.

How can we operate anything if the grid falls?

Actually, it has never flooded fully that I know of. I was down there during a really bad flood during the 90's and the island actually looked good. There was a low spot that got wet, but that was about it. The sides, for the most part, look like small bluffs. The low spot is at the downstream end. That flooding was a rare occasion that i know of only once in my life time. The river is fairly wide and the current isn't all that slow.

Well, good news is that during flood or rising water, animals seek higher ground. Therefore, we'll have our picking of rodents and snakes which we can obviously kill to feed the clan.

A think a lot of people seem to forget that you can survive well without growing food. How do you think the great trappers and explorers of this country survived their expeditions? They trapped, snared, and hunted wild game. If you can set traps, snares, and fish...you should be able to feed your family.

Of course but that would depend on how much land and the size of game it sustains. If you're feeding 5-10 people on that in could be tough unless you have a size able big game population.

What's the shelf life on that?

Most of it is 20-30 years. We should own stock in Mountain House.

Hmm. From what I've read most shelf lifes are around 5-10 years depending on the type and storage. Interesting.

In my opinion, 5 - 10 years isn't acceptable.

I'm storing sealed 5 gallon buckets of rice and beans. I'm also storing water, bleach (to purify water and disinfect) and soap.

I have a BioLite which I've tested. I was able to bring 1.5 liters of water to a boil in 5 minutes using twigs as fuel for vortex fire. I can also grill using the BioLite with all components able to be store in normal backpack.

The key words for storage are "cool, dry, and dark."

Bleach has a relatively short shelf life. Go with calcium hypochlorite (aka pool shock). Shelf life is indefinite and it takes a lot less storage space/weight than liquid bleach. For example, add one teaspoon to two gallons of water to essentially make a solution. Mix that at 1/100 to purify water.

ETA2: Link fixed
ETA: Long term food storage results. Video of a guy that opened up and tested some stuff he had stored for a few decades.

You are correct sir. I had to look up the mixture ratio to make sure I had it right.
